Gourmet on Gamon Yarraville
Trundle down Yarraville's quiet, mainly residential Gamon Street to find Gourmet on Gamon. Occupying a double-story heritage building, complete with veranda and kerbside wicker tables, this quaint cafe has a Victorian corner-store appeal. The homely, welcoming vibe extends to the interior, which is often bustling with prams and ringing with the cries of children from the backroom 'kids' cafe', where lively youngsters merrily feast on chef Simon Frood's youngun'-friendly menu.
All the dishes served here are made on the premises using carefully sourced gourmet ingredients - from the cookies, cakes and coffee, to the signature toasty breakfast sandwich, bursting with grilled bacon, baby spinach and aged cheddar layered on chunky slices of Phillipa's bread. Lunch-hour snacks might include such dishes as the Mediterranean vegetable pie, and can be complemented by one of the bottled beers and wines. The weekend sees eager breakfasters clamouring for sweet and sticky delights such as the cinnamon pancake stack with caramelised bananas, coconut and ice cream.
As well as catering for the normal daily influx of coffee-sipping, sandwich-chomping customers, Gourmet on Gamon also hosts special events such as their Epicurean Concepts wine-tasting nights. Cooking workshops are also a regular occurrence, with renowned chefs and restaurateurs demonstrating some of their favourite dishes.
