The Pinnacle Fitzroy North
Known affectionately as 'the wedge' by some locals, The Pinnacle is an old Victorian, oblong-like building. Inside, the couches are made of rigid wood with cushy insides covered in old velvet, and the windows are dressed in long, scarlet curtains drawn in at the sill. You can't miss the menu - just look for old records that have had their curves cut off, containing an array of mod-Ozish listings, like natural oysters, chicken parma, meatloaf, chicken fillet and lentil steak.
If the main dining area is full upon arrival, just make a sharp swerve after the bar and you'll find a spare room full of dinner tables and chairs, or if the weather is right, you can sit out the back in the beer garden. Over the brick wall you'll hear the hum of the traffic on St Georges Road - unless the kitchen is laden with orders, which is around the time the music gets turned up.
