Amid Crown Street's funky fashion shops and salons, the buzzing garment district and the artsy, gay-friendly vibe, Surry Hills is a hotbed of restaurant activity. Here Sydneysiders can come for some of the city's best baristas and coffee houses, many of them tucked away between converted warehouses that stretch down to Central Station. Surry Hills boasts a swag of celebrity chefs from Kylie Kwong to Bill Granger and Mark Best, while heading south to Cleveland Street unveils the suburb's small stretch of Little India. There's a lot of ground to cover, but there are few foodie areas in Sydney that deliver more quality dining options, from casual to upscale.

Il Baretto Surry Hills
Cheap and tasty sums up this Italian eatery. The decor is very simple but the focus is really on their famous homemade pastas. The outside tables are perfect for sitting back with a coffee and watching Bourke Street bustle by. One of the pioneers of the no-bookings policy in Sydney, it's best to arrive early, or wait at the bar across the road in patient anticipation of the tasty, cheaply priced pastas and modern Italian mains.
