The Nuns' Pool Cronulla
Cronulla's certainly not short of waterfront eateries, but this stylish cafe has upped the ante with its savvy mod-Mediterranean menu.
With the kind of killer ocean frontage that real estate agents dream about, the Nun's Pool sits opposite Shelly Park at the southern end of Cronulla beach. The cafe's name was reportedly inspired by a nearby sandstone rock pool once used for discreet bathing by a group of local nuns.
White stairs lead up from the street to huge glass doors that allow the cafe's indoor and outdoor areas to segue nicely without interrupting that all-important vista. A minimal backdrop of gleaming white walls and tables is softened by such earthy touches as wicker lampshades, a rustic wooden feature wall, rotating floral arrangements and a striped banquette in brown tones.
Come here for breakfast to sample a menu that includes figs and ricotta on toast and cinnamon-poached rhubarb. Wash that down with a Paul Bassett coffee made by specialist baristas, and you'll not be disappointed. On the cafe's lunch menu you'll find contemporary Mediterranean-influenced dishes as stunning as the view. Prices are more expensive than other Cronulla haunts, but here you're paying for creativity, quality and, of course, that view.
