Where to catch filly action - off the track

The Sydney racing scene is a wonderland of pork-pie-wearing punters and pounding hooves. But what are you supposed to do if you were never that interested in the nags in the first place, if race season was less about sizing up the form and more about admiring the giggling Champagne socialites that go hand-in-hand with any racing carnival worth its salt?

Thankfully, it doesn't take a race to make a Sydney girl glam up. Across the city, game girlies don race-worthy dresses, heels and maybe even millinery to gather at some of these chic destinations. Just remember boys: you can look, but if you touch you might get a needle-sharp stiletto in the shin.

1

Gazebo Wine Garden
Elizabeth Bay
With its largely alfresco seating, this is the ideal destination for girls who would otherwise be partying trackside - plus there's no annoying turf for one's heels to sink into. With a 300-strong wine list, there are more than enough bubbles to go around, while the action of Kings Cross offers a decent viewing alternative to galloping horses.

2

Rambutan
Darlinghurst
Rambutan is one of the newest favourites of the restaurant and bar scene, with enough designer features to compete with even the flashiest field fashions. Sydney's style set might be found upstairs nibbling on Thai food, or downstairs sipping Lavender Lollipop Martinis.

North Bondi Italian Food
North Bondi
Beach-chic is the theme at this seaside diner and NBIF's beautiful people are as likely to be dressed in bikini-skimpy beachwear as silk dresses - as long as it's paired with six-inch heels, anything goes.

4

Bayswater Brasserie
Kings Cross
Sophisticates come here for refined dining, but it's not only their blue swimmer crab lasagne that has people filing in the doors. The Bayswater is as much a bar as a restaurant, with saucy cocktails keeping the beautiful people propping up the bar.

5

A Tavola
Darlinghurst
One of the latest entries in the Darlinghurst food race, A Tavola is drawing in socialites with its authentic Italian cuisine. Best of all, the communal table is clearly visible from the street, for those who want to see and be seen.

Verandah Restaurant & Wine Bar
Sydney
Verandah has long been CBD party central, especially on a steamy Friday night, when scantily clad lovelies lean provocatively over the balcony. Renovations have just been finished, making this party bar more glamorous and adding a sophisticated wine bar to the mix.
