Top Takeaways for Winter Hibernation
Sure, everyone loves going out for dinner. Nothing beats putting on your glad rags, tucking into some posh food and not having to do the dishes afterwards. Bliss. But as the icy hand of winter prods our normally balmy land, the idea of leaving the comfort of the doona becomes less appealing. Blue toes sticking out of summer's favourite stilettos and red noses poking out above Gran's knitted scarves kind of ruin the intended glamorous effect.
It's time to temporarily bid your friends farewell, pull out the heater, feather-and-down quilt, woollen socks and remote control, and settle in for the season. These eateries are among those that can aid in your hibernation, either by offering home delivery or at least packing everything in a takeaway box for you to scoff in private.

Erciyes Restaurant
Redfern
|
Erciyes is actually a pretty cool place to dine out if you're inclined to brave the chill, but this institutional Turkish joint knows to nurture its takeaway customers. Free home delivery is offered on weeknights and takeaway food is always available, so you can load up with pide, grilled meats and spiced vine leaves. Don't be shy about tucking into the baba ghanoush - the dips are a highlight and dining at home means you can freely ignore your garlicky pong.

Uyen Vietnamese Restaurant
Waverley
|
Uyen doesn't deliver - they have enough on their hands dealing with the regularly full restaurant. However, it's worth crawling out from under your blankie, donning sunglasses and a scarf (beleaguered celebrity style) and picking up a feast of Vietnamese food. There are plenty of tempting dishes under the heading of specialties, but for true comfort eating, you can't go past meaty spring rolls and a pork curry.

Mr Wolf
St Kilda
|
Pizza is a comfort-eating, sulking-in-front-of-Big Brother classic, but those soggy-crusted franchise pizzas just don't count. If you want a pie with pedigree, the pizzeria started by culinary queen Karen Martini is just the place to get it. Mr Wolf delivers, so you can get a piping hot pizza dressed with river salt, rosemary and smashed olives; or a roast tomato, cauliflower, sausage, pancetta and chilli number delivered to your door.

Mexicali Rose
Richmond
|
Newsflash: Mexican food is not just about cheesy nachos. Mexicali Rose offers an education with a menu of taquitos, quesadillas, enchiladas and, okay, spicy cheesy nachos. They even deliver (through another company) so you can wear your sour cream moustache in the privacy of your own home.

Jones the Grocer
Indooroopilly
|
Jones the Grocer specialises in the sort of comfort food most modern time-poor people just can't find the energy to prepare. Browsing the shelves of a grocer such as this one is almost a compulsory preparation for a successful hibernation. Pick up some house-baked cakes and pastries, or a round of brie from the impressively large cheese room. There's even delivery available if you're willing to fake a party and use their catering service.

Vasco's Portuguese Charcoal Grill
Kingston
|
Still along the same mumsy comfort food lines, Vasco's greets you with the fragrance of spicy grilled meats and oven-fresh bread. There's no delivery service here, but the smells make picking up your takeaway a comfort in itself. The specialty here is Portuguese chicken, served either whole to rip into when you get home, or on rolls.

2 Fat Indians
Cottesloe
|
Indian food is probably second only to the legendary pizza in terms of couch food, and if you want to do it properly, 2 Fat Indians is the way to go. The menu boasts a massive population of dishes, from the ubiquitous vindaloo or rogan josh, to some more unusual creations such as a Goan crayfish curry.
