Sunday pub lunches

Sundays are tough. If you're not battling a killer hangover from the previous night's celebrations, you're likely to be paralysed by the miserable thought of facing work the next day. The best thing to do in this situation is hit the pub. Nothing excessive, just a hearty meal of basic food (preferably of the sort your gran might cook), washed down with a couple of quiet beers to numb the pain.

1

The Cricketers Arms Hotel
Surry Hills
The Cricketers Arms has long been a favoured inner-city haunt. Perhaps part of this can be attributed to its menu, which has recently been overhauled and ranges from pub classics to funky tapas plates. Sundays offer the retro favourite of a roast dinner (either chicken or lamb), followed by bread and butter pudding.

2

The Lord Dudley Hotel
Woollahra
With its rabbit warren of cosy rooms, this ancient pub is an ideal escape on a Sunday arvo. Be warned: the combination of comfy furnishings, hefty pints and the gentle murmur of fellow drinkers is soporific, but it's worth taking the risk of nodding off at your bar stool. A hearty lunch here might include a meaty pie; beef bangers with peas and mash; or something a little more exotic such as a Thai chicken curry.

3

Claremont Hotel
Claremont
This friendly local pub provides hearty pub classics every day of the week and on Sundays they pull out that weekend classic, the Sunday roast. Sod staying at home and cooking (or burning) your own roast lamb. The Claremont's bargain $9 roast is too good to pass up.

4

Edgar's Inn
Ainslie
Edgar's manages to embrace the best bits of a local pub (comfy atmosphere, generous serves of comforting food) without taking on the less savoury stereotypes (beer-stained carpet, bleary-eyed regulars). On sunny afternoons you can grab a seat in the courtyard and soak up some vitamin D while tucking into a steak sandwich.

5

Paddy Maguires
Subiaco
Paddy's is a quintessential Irish pub, complete with Celtic crests, Guinness on tap and barrels of craic. If you're escaping from the drizzle of a rainy Sunday, nothing hits the spot more squarely than a beef and Guinness pie. Sink a few pints in the bar after lunch, when live bands take to the stage.

6

Lamaro's
South Melbourne
Nothing beats a pub lunch on a lazy Sunday, but if bangers 'n' mash aren't your thing, there's no need to suffer. Gastropubs are made for those who prefer foie gras to parma, and Lamaro's is one of the best. Headed by former Taxi executive chef Michael Lambie, the kitchen serves up a slick yet comforting menu of European and Asian cuisine.

7

Provincial Hotel
Fitzroy
Fitzroy is a breeding ground for great pubs, from the adorably skanky local boozer to the scarily smart pub-slash-cocktail-haunt. The Provincial strikes a happy sort of middle ground: self-consciously groovy, but eclectic enough to please Fitzroy's sideburn-sporting hipsters. After a hearty Sunday feed of woodfired pizza, drop into the Chameleon Bar and check out the Sunday acoustic sessions.
