Number One Restaurant Puns

Have you been into Thai-tanic? Or got stuck in a Thai-foon? Was it Thai-riffic? As great as they are, Thai restaurants aren't the only places that have colourful names. In fact, in our great southern land we're proudly home to hundreds, maybe even thousands, of restaurants with names that amuse or perhaps confuse. From crafty puns on the kind of cuisine served (Peas Please) to pop culture references (Pulp Kitchen) to downright funny imagery (Flying Fajita Sisters), it's hard not to love a restaurant that doesn't take itself too seriously.

So while perusing these pun-packed names, stop for a moment to consider one very important question: where in the world would we be without udderly divine restaurant names that leave us tongue-Thai'd?

1

Thai-Riffic
Newtown
Newtown and Thai go together like vegetarians and tofu. And there's plenty of vegie and tofu options amid the chicken, beef, fish, octopus, duck and seafood stir-fries on the menu. It's simply Thai-riffic!

2

Bow Thai
Fortitude Valley
You don't have to wear a tux to eat at Bow Thai (but why not wear a bow tie anyway just for fun?). This Fortitude Valley mainstay opened up in 1991, and continues to make 'em hurry for the red, yellow and green curries.

3

The Codfather
Stanmore
"I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" - the famous words of The Godfather's Don Corleone resonates at this Stanmore seafood restaurant, where fish fanatics simply can't refuse the tempting array of local produce appearing on its constantly changing menu.

4

The Groper and His Wife
City Beach
Also named after an iconic underwater dweller, this long-standing fish 'n' chips spot is a snappy place for a snapper and a chipper place for hot chips. And who knew gropers had wives? Here's to the beauty of matrimonial marine life.

5

Yeah Maan
South Yarra
Rastafarians unite! This Jamaican joint is a South Yarra staple, jam-packed with cheekily named Caribbean specialties such as the Jamaican Jerk Chicken and the Caribbean Chicken Burga. It's enough to make you want to grow dreadlocks and switch Bob Marley on repeat.

6

Lentil As Anything
St Kilda
This bohemian haven for vegetarians, vegans and friends is a lentil love-in and pay-what-you-can venture. A sly nod to Aussie rockers Mental as Anything, makers of '80s hits such as 'Live it Up' and 'Rock 'n' Roll Music', there's another Lentil cafe in Abbotsford.

7

Udderly Divine Cafe
Cowaramup
While Sydney has Holy Cow and MuMu Grill, and the Gold Coast has the MooMoo Wine Bar and Grill, the best of the bovine puns comes from this humble old-fashioned cafe that's located right in the dairy country in the inspiringly named Cowaramup. With cow mosaics and paintings on the walls and beef burgers on the plates, it's full of things that make you go moo.

Pulp Kitchen
Ainslie
With seemingly very little in common with Tarantino's 1994 movie Pulp Fiction other than its innovative moniker, this top-notch European restaurant features braised lamb shanks, handmade spaghetti and Berkshire pork sausages on its illustrious menu. In the same city you'll also find the quirkily labelled Psychedeli and JusQytly.

Wok's Happ'ning
Adelaide
An ode to the wonderful wok, this vibrant restaurant is true to its name, focusing on Asian curries, stir-fries and noodle dishes. Another wok-loving restaurant is Sydney's Wok on Inn Noodle Bar. But let's not forget Adelaide's own Thai-riffically named Tongue Thai'd.
