Mother's Day Lunch 2010

Mother's Day is generally the one calendar event that comes around and most people start wondering where the start of the year went. They then invariably rush out and get some over-priced flowers and make a barely edible breakfast in bed.

Instead, why not treat the woman who brought you into this world, raised you and cared for you to something a little more heartfelt and special. Here's a choice selection of places that know how to make Mum feel loved.

1

Sapore
St Kilda
Families can indulge the matriarch with a little extra at Sapore, with a two- or three-course meal on that special Sunday in May. There are several options for Mum to choose from, including a beef carpaccio to start before moving onto a truffle-scented chicken breast with gnocchi alla Romana. However, the best part of Mothers Day at Sapore is that all bookings go into the draw to win a private chef for a night. Not only will the resident sous-chef come to your house and prepare a quality three-course meal for four, but it's one more night where Mum doesn t have to cook ($60-$70 per person).

Saganaki Greek Cuisine & Grill
Docklands
Give Mum a treat of a different kind this Mother's Day with a feast of modern Greek cuisine. A glass of sparkles and a trio of dips on arrival will set the mood before a shared selection of mezze plates and different mains. A blueberry ricotta tart with blueberry compote and vanilla bean ice cream to finish off is the perfect way to show Mum you appreciate her ($65 per adult, $39 per child).

3

The Terrace on Pittwater
Newport
Instead of the cliched breakfast in bed, mothers can enjoy a full breakfast buffet in the morning here ($27 per person, $17 per child) or wait until lunchtime for the three-course set menu. Served with a complimentary glass of Salinger to begin and ending with coffee or tea and chocolates, the menu is designed simply to spoil Mum. The menu will feature decadent seafood options such as tempura Yamba prawns or pan-roasted local jewfish with lobster ravioli. Top it all off with a pistachio nougat parfait with glass biscuit and orange almond sponge and it sounds like a pretty good way to show Mum you care ($80 per adult, $27 per child).

The Cowrie
Terrigal
For the mum who loves her food, spoil her rotten this Mother's Day with a three-course lunch overlooking the ocean. The menu includes complimentary bubbles on arrival, flowers, and a gift for every mum. Kids can give her an extra treat with an optional seafood platter as part of the decadent fare on offer.

5

551 Restaurant & Bar
Brisbane
A classy lady deserves a classy feast, so this elegant new diner pulls out all stops to bring a smile to Mum's dial. At $65 per head, the four-course lunch contains a particularly enticing dessert: a blueberry-infused sweet cream cheese inside a raspberry and chocolate brioche. All this and a glass of bubbly, a rose, and possibly the most novel thing of all, free parking.

6

Montereys
Perth
Instead of trying to choose what Mum would like for lunch, why not take her to a buffet and let her decide? Montereys will hold a special Mother's Day lunch this year, with a complimentary piccolo of Lindauer Fraise ($75 per head).

7

Classics Restaurant
Walkerville
Treating Mum to an elegant night out is a piece of cake at Classics Restaurant. Actually, it's a three-course mod-Oz-meets-European menu, but let's not get picky with semantics. On the menu are petite fillet mignon, roast pork belly and a sticky date pudding (after all, Mother's Day is virtually Christmas Day for mums). The three-course option is an affordable $65 per head, with two courses at $50 per person.

8

The Stackings at Peppermint Bay
Woodbridge
One of Tassie's most lauded restaurants is hosting an absolutely faaaabulous Mother's Day soiree right on the doorstep to Bruny Island and the d'Entrecasteaux Channel. The details about the lunch are soon to be released, though in the mean time we can assume that chef Simon Holloway's love of top local produce is sure to be on display.

9

Blue Marlin Bistro
Fannie Bay
It's Mother's Day again in Darwin, and like the local characters, it's a laidback affair. There's no fancy-schmancy set menu at this luncheon; it's all about the hearty bistro fare. It's a good excuse as any to splash out on the a la carte menu, which features grain-fed scotch fillet, grilled Territory barramundi, chargrilled vegetable and fetta tart and other flavoursome foods. The waterside Fannie Bay locale can't hurt either, right?

10

Teatro Vivaldi
City
Drama queens and their families can soak up theatrical environs of Teatro Vivaldi at the ANU Arts Centre. This always-vibrant Canberra institution is holding a four-course lunch ($65 per head) to the dulcet tones of the baby grand piano. Mums get a free gift too, but that's hush-hush until you get there. In the afternoon, Teatro turns its attention to high teas ($35 a pop), with a glass of sparkling on arrival. And of course, in the evening the regular dinner and show packages are available (this night's show is Monty Python's Spamalot).
