Chinese New Year Dining 2010

Kung Hei Fat Choy! That's "Happy Chinese New Year!", folks. It's time to celebrate the Year of the Tiger in traditional Chinese fashion: with food, music, dance, colour and tokens of good fortune all around. The yourRestaurants team has rounded up some of the most vibrant festivities that Chinese restaurants are holding in honour of this special time.

1

Oriental Tea House
South Yarra
Lion dance performances, firecracker shows and prawn dumplings galore - it's all happening at South Yarra's Oriental Tea House this Chinese New Year. As well as the aforementioned attractions, this Chinese gem is launching a new chef's special menu in time for the New Year (also available at the sister restaurants in the city and Chadstone).

2

Shark Fin House
Melbourne
Over the three nights of February 13-15, this Melbourne institution is ushering in the year of the tiger with a live band, a magician, a traditional lion dance, and the New Year s special, "A Great Catch" - a fillet of Queensland coral trout steamed with mushroom, ham and greens.

3

Billy Kwong
Surry Hills
The queen of Asian cooking, Kylie Kwong, demonstrates why she's among Australia's best at this decadent 10-course banquet, held in her renowned Surry Hills eatery on two consecutive nights, February 15-16. The menu has been prepared using only the freshest local, organic and biodynamic produce, with biodynamic wines to match, and the meal is complemented by a live demonstration from the master herself. Tickets are $180 per person and all proceeds go towards Buddhist practitioner Khandro Thrinlay Chodon's work with the people of the Indian Himalayas.

4

Port Orient Harbourside
Darling Harbour
If the bustle and excitement of yum cha isn't spectacle enough, then this one-off Yum Cha Dragon Boat Lunch is a must. For $65, you can enjoy a feast of delectable Chinese victuals while looking out over the dazzling Dragon Boat Races in Darling Harbour on Sunday, February 28.

5

Marigold Citymark
Haymarket
The Australian Chinese Community Association (ACCA) present their annual Chinese New Year Banquet, held in the grand surrounds of the Marigold Restaurant (Citymark) on Saturday, February 27. For $70 per person, tuck into authentic Cantonese cuisine and be entertained by a festive line-up of Chinese performances.

6

Yu Restaurant
Burswood
One of the sparkling gems of the Burswood Entertainment Complex, Yu Restaurant is determined to keep the celebrations going for as long as possible, offering a special banquet menu for $128 per person from February 14 to February 28. A nice touch is that each dish is named with a message of good luck, like the "Boundless Gold and Jade Fortune" crispy roasted duck.

7

Rice Chinese Cuisine
Parkside
Celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Tiger with a banquet at this stylish and authentic Chinese eatery. The specially designed four-course banquet includes some new meals not on the regular menu, but with the quality of chefs in this kitchen you know it will be something to remember. Entertainment on the night will include a brigade of lion dancers as well as a special Shaolin kung-fu demonstration.

8

Beijing House
Brisbane
This Chun Jie (Chinese New Year), why not enjoy a meal at this authentic Chinese yum cha house, secreted away on Queen Street Mall? A peaceful dining experience may be just the ticket for New Year's revellers before the deluge of celebrations begin in Brisbane's Chinatown district: lion dancers, martial arts performers, Cantonese opera singers, fireworks displays and circus troupes just to name a few.
