Although reaching a state of culinary Zen while dining at Zen Japanese Restaurant in Subiaco is highly likely, this restaurant's name actually refers to the Japanese term for a mini dining table, encouraging an intimate style of dining with an authentic cultural touch. Dedicated and experienced owner/chef Hideki Hayashi meshes traditional Japanese recipes with an Australian style, offering everything from teriyaki chicken, fish and beef bento boxes, to hot and cold udon soups that bring a bit of noodle nourishment.

asian ZENsation!
we'd never been to a traditional japanese restaurant before so it was hard to know what to get.
we decided on the chef's specials - tasting plate for entree and hotpot for mains. we also saw som other people eating a soup dish so we tried that too!
the tasting plate was so divine... so may different flavours... definitely my favourite!
the soup was actually an egg custard with seafood... it was very unusual... flavours i'd never experienced before. the host said it was one of their most popular dishes and i certainly tasted why... definitely one to try.
the hot pot was just crazy... so much seafood and tofu (and by this time we were already almost full!). we wished we hadn't gotten so much as we weren't able to eat it all. the hotpot was delicious though i was a bit seafooded out by that time too.
the host, waitresses and chef were fantastic... so friendly and helpful - and yes they do peak good english, the host had an aussie accent even.
the only disappointment was the ambience, its lacking a touch of atmosphere but don't let this deter you from enjoying an awesome meal.
we will be back for more!!

Looks can be (very) decieving
Where has this place been hiding...
I can't say that my first impressions of Zen were much. It has next to no ambience, I almost needed an interpreter when dealing with the wait staff and the armrest fell off the chair I was sitting on.
I can't say any of this mattered once I tried the beef tataki starter, which put simply was divine.
The beef was good quality, the fresh garlic and the dipping sauces were just right. It was superb, there was even gesticulations such were the reaction when I ran out of superlatives.
Same can be said for the agedashi tofu, and the eel.
The tempura was a little tired, but everything else was great.
For a reasonably priced treat put this high on the list. I have been back and I can confirm that it was no fluke.
