Zapata's Restaurante

Following its flagship Fremantle fiesta, this Mexican firecracker of a restaurant likes it hot, whether it be a beef taco, a chicken quesadilla or a plate of nachos. Taking over the space of the New Orleans Restaurant, Zapata's Restaurant is centred on providing classic Latino flavours in both its food and beverages, with an impressive list of South American, Argentinian, Brazilian, Bolivian, Cuban, Chilean and Australian beers, spirits and wines. Last but not least, a carafe of sangria adds extra zest to a Zapata's dinner.

Pretty tasty....
I was pleasantly surprised with Zapata's... good Mexican is hard to find in Perth and this was OK for the price.

The only disappointment was the nachos - dry, boring with far too many chips and not enough topping, but at half price they were OK.

Our group also had the vegetarian combo - spinach and potato burrito and bean taco. Both were tasty and fresh and a nice change from the usual beans and rice served to vegos'.

The beef fajitas were OK - though seemed to have too many onions and capsicum and not enough meat, but were tasty.

Finally there was the chicken/beef combo - a chicken taco with nicely flavoured breast meat pieces and lots of stuffing. The beef burrito was also really tasty, although for the first time I saw the salad stuffing served on top of the burrito rather than inside.

It was pretty clear the burrito's had been microwaved - they had that tough chewy bottom that went hard as they cooled but they were certainly full of flavour.

We also shared the dip combo - all were tasty though the salsa was a little bland.

Service was very fast and attentive, the cocktails were fine, although the background music was purely awful!

This isn't classy Mexican, but after woeful food and disgusting service at Santa Fe in Subi, this is a far better choice for a cheap 'n cheerful Mexican feed. And with half price nachos and $5 tacos on Tues & Wed, it's a bargain!

Only good for cocktails
Usually I order the Fajitas that are probably the nicest thing on the menu, but they are only worth it if you order them for two. How they are served is rather inconsistent as well, sometimes you get a good set and sometimes you get what looks like leftovers. Last night I ordered just a traditional nachoes, the waitress asked me if I wanted to pay an extra 2 dollars for additional toppings such as tomatoes, guacamole and extra sour cream. I regretfully declined. What arrived was some plain corn chips, layered in a puree looking sauce and a pathetically small dollop of sour cream. I was shocked to say the least there wasn't even any cheese. Since when did cheese become an additional topping?

The cocktails however are brilliant value on Wednesday nights when you can get a carafe for 10 dollars. If it weren't for that I highly doubt my friends and I would eat there ever. It's a case of a relatively nice, friendly, good atmosphered restaurant that suffers from crappy food. A shame and disappointing.
