What a let down
On my way to Hippo Creek only to find they had relocated. Walked in and took a glance at the menu, decided to give it a go. The starter of duck spring rolls was immaculate, presentation, execution and taste were brilliant. Left me with high hopes of the main, slow roasted beef, roast pots, mustard jus.... Being a head chef, in a Michelin starred restaurant in Europe I know my stuff, have trained in over 12 different countries in 4 continents, you can take my word for it, it's not biased. The beef tasted like stewing steak that had been left in a slow cooker for numerous days, riddled with fat. The roast potatoes were wedges that had been submerged in cooking oil then placed in an oven on a high heat which blackened the tops without basting, leaving one side burnt to a crisp and the other undercooked. The mustard sauce would have been OK, not enough tartness to constitute a mustard jus but the fact that it had split with the oil on the plate was just unacceptable. A couple of shallots thrown in for good measure did not enhance or compliment the dish, pan fried crispy Julien of some description had been scattered over the top, might as well have put shards of steel on the dish, again, completely unnecessary. Overall, like I said, the starter was sublime the main was a shambles. The head chef should be disgraced to let food go out with such a vast contrast.
