Yuzu Kaiten Sushi is the latest in what might potentially be one of a string of restaurants for this enterprising young restaurateur. Kenny Chan already owns the funky Malaysian eatery Goreng2, and now he is trying his hand at Japanese. Kaiten - which literally translates as 'food conveyer belt' - is what Yuzu is all about, with a trainload of sushi temptations gliding past the ravenous diner: the tuna kim chee nigiri is served with roasted red capsicum, with the kim chee giving a king-hit of spice if the wasabi hasn't already done its job; the house special, prawn katsu and avocado nigiri, is a visual feast, teetering tall and finished with a criss-cross of Japanese mayonnaise. All are made in-house and on display by chef Pack Ming.
The decor is modern and fashionable, with floor-to-ceiling murals of Tokyo at night, giving the small space a much vaster appearance. Yuzu is a little hard to find, but if you're familiar with the sights and sounds of Beaufort Street, you'll easily find it nestled behind the Dome Cafe and Fresh Provisions (on Walcott Street). Open for lunch and dinner.
