Yim Yam

Located in Yarraville, one of Melbourne's inner-western suburbs, Yim Yam is part of the constantly improving Ballarat Street. The decor is simple - there are flowers atop unclothed blond wood tables, stylish paintings adorn spring green panels on the walls and you also get a great view of a busy pack of chefs dressed in black, preparing your meals in the bustling kitchen.

As the owner, Walaipan Hatfield, was originally from Thailand but lived in Laos for three years, her menu has taken inspiration from the home-style cooking of these two countries. Thai inspiration features predominately on the menu, although it is still possible to have an entirely Laotian meal. The food is beautifully prepared, well priced and most of all, excellent. The mix of flavours and textures has to be tasted to be believed.

Wow!!!!
That was the word my wife used about 30 times while eating the toasted rice and coconut salad. This dish was recommended by Matt Preston as one of his 5 things you must eat in Melbourne, and I can see why. Just a wonderful combination of flavours and the toasted rice is magic. We also had the fish cakes for entree which were lovely, and the Pad Thai chicken which also was delicious. It was possibly the best Thai we have ever had in Australia, and it was as good if not better than anything we had during our recent 2 week vacation in Thailand.

The restaurant itself is very small but has a nice feel to it, and the service was quick and pleasant. Really couldn't fault anything about this meal, and it's so cheap! We will be back that's for sure.

Great Find!!
Fabulous food and a cool small curry house feel to it. Was looking to try some Laotian food and this exceeded expectations. Will definately go back. Very well priced too.
