Yamato

This tiny Japanese eatery is off the beaten track behind Chinatown, though definitely worth the extra effort to find it. The food is rustic Japanese, with some stellar gyoza and rich, flavoursome beef and vegetable hotpots.

We went to Exhibition Street site, the food was great and well priced. Service needs to be improved but waitresses were friendly when approached, there was a little bit of confusion in translation that was slightly frustrating. Overall enjoyable and we will eat there again.

Funky Japanese
Price - value for money. Four of us ate very well and had a couple of drinks each for $35pp. Prices may have gone down since last review? or else they made poor choices!

Sake selection - fantastic!

Sashimi - excellent.

I did find that most entree options were deep fried, which I found unusual for a Japanese restaurant; however we managed to choose a few of those deep-fried and some of the others that were not and were more than happy with our selection.

Unfortunately I did not try the sukiyaki, going by the last reviewer's comments and I regret this - I found the sukiyaki and shabushabu going out to other tables looked very appetising.

Well worth a try, again, book ahead for 3 or more people.

We used to go to Yamato, and returned recently after a hiatus but unfortunately won't be returning.
The service is almost non-existent with our first two wine choices being unavailable and no alternate offers. Our main course choice - sukiyaki - was regretably the worst I've had. The young Japanese waitress must not have cooked it before as she put the beef in first, with vegetables last giving an end result of overcooked meat and raw onion. There was two pieces (I'm not joking) of very thinly sliced carrot for us to share (at least we got one each) and no mushrooms. The pricing is not cheap at $70 for two people - entree and main only. If I were you I'd go to Yu-u instead!
