Sitting along Collingwood's eclectically cool eat-street, this wholesome modern eatery offers a selection of Japanese accented dishes. The meals on offer include an interesting cheese curry, a classic teriyaki don, a Thai green curry and, for dessert, a delightfully rich New York-style cheesecake topped with lashings of warm caramel sauce.

Oishii !
I love eating at this place. I have tried nearly every vegetarian dish on the menu and most of the fish dishes as well. They do Japanese in a way that I have not experienced at any other Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. (Anyone who knows Iku in Sydney might like to know that I think the two places have much in common) The food is fresh, modern and lively and is also hearty. I feel like I'm the guest of a highly talented cook in the mountains of northern Japan.
The quality of the ingredients they use really shines through. Each dish tastes so damn fresh.
I love the Japanese Curry and Goma Udon and the Inigiri. Oh, and the chocolate cake with green tea icecream is delicious.
The soups are perfect on a cold winter's evening...
If you have not been then it's definitely worth a visit to make up your own mind. There are plenty of people that swear by this place and I'm one of them.

Unusual
It's strange that there seem to be very negative comments when this restaurant is always busy and full of happy regulars. Also the press from well known journalists has been positive. I think there are some nasty people in this world, and its a shame they try ruin the reputation of a restaurant because they hold a grudge.

Also disappointed
I can echo the previous review. I thought this restaurant was over-hyped and over-priced. The food is supposedly "creative" Japanese, but it doesn't really work in my opinion. For example, avocado doesn't lend itself to tempura because it's bland and fatty. The vegetable miso was alright but not particularly tasty, the gyoza was okay but not outstanding, and I don't remember much of the rest a week later, which tells you something. I thought it's far too expensive for what you get. There are much better Japanese restaurants around.

Dissapointing
I ate at wood spoon recently and wanted to share my experience. I was happy with the service and atmosphere, no problems there. Food on the other hand just didn't taste very good and the mix of flavors didn't work. The foods I at were -
Eda Mame - These Japanese peas in their skin were too soft and overcooked.
Gyoza - Didn't taste very good at all, filling was ordinary, skin was hard and were more reminicent of a korean pan fried dumpling than gyoza.
Agedashi tofu - Hmm this one was strange, Agedashi tofu should use dashi as the flavour base, instead a sweet soy was used, tasted ok but wasn't really what I expected.
Okonomiyaki - Possibly the worst okonomiyaki I have ever eaten. Tasted like instant pancake mix blended with a tiny bit of cabbage and tasted a bit sweet. I thought it was pre-cooked and microwaved as it came out only luke warm.
Japanese pickles - These were not really sukimono but only vegetables marinated in vinegar and had a bay leaf in them??
Seaweed salad - Far too much bean sprouts, not enough seaweed and dressing too bitter.
Chicken udon - This one had a strong sesame flavour but was way too bitter, very overpriced too for the volume served.
Onigiri - These were probably the best thing of the evening, but the rice was cooked too much making them too soft.
Cheesecake - The cheesecake was still frozen inside, was very had and crumbly.
Overall a very ordinary dining experience, atmosphere was fine and there seemed to be a reasonable amount of customers but food was not restaurant quality and overpriced. The only highlight is the alcohol list with the best selection of beer that I have seen in any Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. I will never be going back though.
