There's something to be said for a venue that can still attract a crowd after 150 years. Of course, Wesley Anne wasn't always a late-night establishment. In fact it was quite the opposite, starting life as a church way back in 1854. Now it wears a couple of hats - equally known as a live music venue, bar and restaurant - but the remnants of its ecclesiastical past can be seen at every turn. It's here, beneath wrought vaulted ceilings and wrought iron chandeliers, that diners can enjoy the rather more modern menu.
Food is divided into 'peckish' and 'hungry' sizes, which suits the half-dining/half-drinking crowd to a tee. The smaller dishes are tapas-style delights: field mushrooms stuffed with marinated fetta or spicy meatballs. The larger portions maintain the strong European influence with plenty of pastas and risottos (including a decadent seafood risotto with saffron), sitting alongside hearty mains like pork sausage on garlic mash with an apple, bacon and leek jus.
