Originally the summer playground of the WA governors and their privileged guests, this fortress-style, colonial mansion is now the Quokka Arms Hotel, and fortunately you don't need vice-regal connections to experience its unique stately charm. Inside, the Waterside Bar & Restaurant has replaced the old Hampton's Sportsmen's Bar and Chargrill, ridding the place of its reputation as the place to "get blotto on Rotto" and creating a much more relaxed, family-friendly environment in which great company and good food can be enjoyed.
Accomplished chef Warren Potter has conjured up toothsome Rotto-inspired toppings, even naming one in honour of the old governors of WA. Just as tempting is the Waterside's well-stocked meat counter, where you can choose your own steak and cook it on the barbecue. The biggest drawcard is the seemingly boundless beachside beer garden, offering awe-inspiring views across the Indian Ocean to Perth and breathtaking starry night skies. If it's too cool to dine outside, the restaurant's huge French doors afford ocean glimpses and the cushioned leatherette booths provide intimate spaces.
