Waters Edge

Once lauded as one of the finest fine diners in Australia, Waters Edge has toned down the formality since a change in ownership, but has lost none of its appeal. The wide windows still offer panoramic views of Lake Burley Griffin and the white leather chairs still smack of fine-dining sophistication - but the American walnut tables have lost their linen shields. The dinner menu includes wide-ranging mod-Oz options to please all patrons, and uses the freshest produce available.

cafe quality food at fine dining price
Water s edge s unimaginative and ordinary dishes doesn t deserve chef s hat award - had similar dishes at local cafe for half the price, got better service at local club. Waiters need some serious training. What a waste of such a beautiful location.

Beautiful view...um, that's about it
I attended my work Christmas lunch here and overall it was a pretty lame experience. The menu seemed interesting enough, and I was enticed by the typical fine dining experience of small portions on massive plates, but instead of an amazing culinary experience, the food was nice, but only nice.

I ordered the snapper with pea risotto vongole, tomato vinaigrette and pea mousse for my main and the ruby grapefruit brulee tart with white chocolate sorbet for dessert. The snapper and the brulee tart were well presented, but they just didn't seem to have that wow factor I had anticipated.

There was mixed opinion amongst our group, some being unimpressed like myself, while others were very impressed. One thing that we all agreed upon though was the poor service. The manager seemed a bit vague and was walking around in circles, and the head waitress although she seemed more dedicated to her tasks, looked completely stressed out which may be the reason why she forgot to smile. Furthermore, some of us had swapped places and when the staff came out with the deserts they freaked out with the head waitress muttering something along the lines of, "Well we'll just put them down in the places that you were originally in, since you've all swapped around, and you can sort it out from there". How hard is it to say "Who ordered the brulee?" Finally, I couldn't go without mentioning the waitor with the iron. In all my dining experience, I've never come across a waitor ironing the tablecloths while I'm eating, although I don t get the impression that he was intentionally being rude (just ignorant).

Overall, I shouldn't complain since it was company-paid, but if that isn't your situation and you don't mind forking out the money, or you aren t fussed about service, or you re on a diet and aren t planning to eat much anyway, then by all means try it out. At least there is the view.

Ok but some problems
Went as part of a large group. Yamba Prawn and scampi dumpling was well presented, Salmon gravlax compliments this dish well.

Ordered the steak with gnocchi for main. Steak was ordered rare but came out more like med/rare. One gnocchi was burnt underneath. I wonder if it was intentional that it was placed burnt side down?

Desert was vanilla pannacotta. Unfortunately mine came out late because it was forgotten.

Overall it could do with some improvements and attention to detail.

Impressed
Stumbled on this nice eatery quite by accident, have lived in Canberra for decades and never knew it existed!

Had a great experience, will be back!

Wonderful!
Waters Edge really looked after us. We had VIPs to entertain, and were locked into a late lunch timeslot. Our usual choice was not helpful, so we tried Waters Edge... no one had tried it since it re-opened.

But from the very first contact, I was confident that they wouldn't let us down. They were so positive and professional, offering all kinds of helpful extras in the many phone conversations we had, setting the event up.

The meal was well-cooked and served with complete professional skill. The menu is good (I'm not sure it's as cafe-ish as the official description makes it sound though!), with a nice winelist. Lovely decore, sparsely elegant. A perfect place for a special meal.

We recommend it to anyone wanting somewhere with real quality, in everything they do. We'll definitely be using them from now on.
