Wasabi

Wasabi sets the standard for Japanese food served in a restaurant with Australian mentality. Chef Hajime Horiguchi grew up in Kyoto, where he was immersed in the culinary world from a young age and dedicated much of his life to food.

In 2002 he travelled to Australia and decided our produce and people were too good to leave, so returned in 2007 to work for Wasabi. After three years as sous chef he now leads the young creative team who create quality, seasonal Japanese food.

Wasabi is perhaps best known for its fresh sushi and sashimi; and those guests looking after a traditional Japanese eating experience guests can indulge in the tatami room.

Perfect lunch spot
Sitting along the river for a long lunch. Perfect. If you really want to try some different tastes just order of the daily list. We had barramundi with salmon egg, soy tea poached octopus , tempura zuchini flowers with a trout/scallop filling and delightfully delicate egg savory custard with prawn and crab. Such an interesting way to start our meal. Finished with a champagne jelly. So while all very japanese it just has a modern twist which doesnt westernize it too much. Including wine $120pp

Excellent Japanese
Outstanding quality of food and presentation - thoroughly yum! There's also a very good selection of Sake and sound guidance about which one to select. The service was unobtrusive and knowledgeable. The dining room at night means the superb position on the waterside of Noosa Sound is hidden and the dining room is then a bit "barn-like" and not very Japanese. However, the choice of American "big band" music and singing, also played too loudly, was incongruous and seriously obtrusive on what was otherwise a emeorable meal.

A very happy Mother
My husband took me for mother's day lunch and had secured a river table (points for him). Just a wonderful experience with lots of dishes to share. Not like tapas but just entree size dishes designed to try different offerings. Fun. Real attention to presentation. Our first time so staff quite helpful. Best dishes blue fin tastings, scallop/sea urchin, tempura prawns, wagyu & champagne jelly. The sushi is definately a standout.

Over priced and pretentious
We decided to try Wasabi after reading of its latest recognition from Gourmet Traveller and after recently eating at Kenji In Adelaide, we were looking forward to dining out Japanese.
We were seated in their version of a tatami room, I suppose, except after you go cross country to get to your seat, it is more like a pit where you are sitting at a shared table with your feet dangling down in the pit. The better seating is in the main part of the restaurant where the lucky ones are sitting at tables on normal chairs.
We chose tempura vegetables, gyozas, wagyu oxtail and fries snapper(didn't have so we had suzuki). We thought we had ordered enough but the waitress told us that the meal portions were small and by 'small' I think she meant a teaspoon full. The sizes were ridiculously small and they could not by any means be considered shared plates as you would be fighting to get a mouthful yourself.
I was disappointd by the food. Truly there wasn't anything there that made a statement unless that statement is "I'm pretentious. See how I can serve little itty bitty portions and you'll pay anything I ask".
Leaving Wasabi's we were just glad to be doing so.

Tops for japanese
By far one of the best japanese in Australia. Quite traditional but when stretched the results are outstanding like abalone & wagyu. Well trained staff. Suprisingly inexpensive champagnes for some reason.

Happily impressed
Went for a late lunch after reading john lethlean's positive review in The Australian and we heartedly agree. They avoid the traps of fusion as the chef sticks to his traditional roots. Lots of sydney restaurants could learn a thing or two from these guys like where do they get their fish?? I do admit to ordering the chocolate plate so the adage of don't order dessert in an asian restaurant is blown out of the water. We stayed to watch the sunset in the bar and wasabi might just have the best unobstructed view in town. Well done.
