Wah Hing

Even in the peak of a busy lunch hour, the food is excellent and the service is both friendly and prompt. The popular congee is a tasty rice porridge contrasted with crunchy, deep-fried batter dumplings, chicken breast and a flotsam of scallop flesh adding an ethereal and smoky accent. The must-try signature dish, Wah Hing chicken, is named in honour of the owner's grandfather. Chicken breasts are tenderised and kept moist by pan-frying in an egg batter and served with a sweetened ginger and spring onion sauce.

Try a wine match with Rockford's Alicante Bouschet, or splash out on a premium back-vintage wine such as Lake Breeze winemaker's 2000 Shiraz. The dining room may not win any awards for aesthetics, with wine and food specials scrawled in fluorescent script on the mirrored walls, but for practicality the yellow and black banquette, timber veneer tables and metal-framed, plywood chairs are easy to reset and perfect for serving hungry, time-poor diners. Of course, when the food's this good why worry about the furniture?

Best Chinese in Gouger Street
From the BBC (beans with bean curd) to the salt and pepper soft-shell crab, everything we tried was delicious - so much so we ate there three times in three weeks. The staff are efficient and when we mentioned we were in a rush as one person had to return to work, the food arrived swiftly. And you do't have to ask for water, it just arrives - always a good sign.

Great birthday dinner
The food tonight was really good. There were 8 of us on a table so we ordered over 10 different dishes. Everything was great. There were a few stand out dishes: the crispy beef was excellent, the pork ribs were melt in your mouth, the smoked tea duck was lean and tasty, the chinese brocolli tender and for 8 people it was cheaper to order fried rice rather than steamed rice. The only dish that was average was the prawn toast.
There were no problems with the service but it probably helps that it was a Monday night (although it still was mostly full).
Overall it was a good dinner and we'll be back again.

Not agree
I don't agree with starsymphony. If you're a regular customer to Wah Hing you should knew by now there is only ONE chef in the kitchen and THAT IS why the food have standard. I went last Friday and busy as usual but the staffs are really helpful. Food is fantastic as usual and price are reasonable. If you think the services were bad..you should stay home!

Not going back
I used to frequent Wah Hing quite a bit because I enjoyed the food. My friends and sister and I went recently and everything was just bad. The service staff was unfriendly, did not smile at us and was very rude to us. After waiting for close to 40 minutes for our lunch, we asked them and immediately, 3 plates of noodles came out. We ordered crispy noodles but the noodles came out soggy. 3-5 minutes later, the table next to us who also ordered crispy noodles got her dish - with the noodles crispy. Upon reporting this to the owner, she raised her voice at my sister.

While paying the bill, I mentioned the soggy noodles to the waitstaff who did not respond or even apologise for it. I then said I was just letting them know and I will not go there anymore. In response, she said "That's up to you" without even an apology.

The service is appalling. I will not recommend this place to people looking for good service while they dine.

regular
My partner and I always go to Wah Hing when we want good Chinese. The food is always fantastic - their food has much less oil than most Chinese restaurants and the service is usually prompt.
Service isn't always consistant as you have your good days and days when you question if they want you in there. Pricing is pretty good too.
However when it gets busy, its hard to hear the person/s you're dining with.
Overall this place isn't perfect, but the food keeps you coming back.

Regular Diner
I have eaten here on more than one occasion. We have always enjoyed our experiences. The food was great and the service was good. Staff were busy but still able to look out for our needs. I suggest people try this place out.

Terrible service
I use to be a frequent customer to Wah Hing because of the good food. However, I am never going there again because of the terrible service. It's happened way too many times to be overlooked. The waiting team is unhappy, rude and unwilling to serve. Sometimes when it gets too busy, they totally ignore you. I did not have a good time there, and I dont appreciate attitude from the waiting team. Therefore, I would not recommend this.
