Wafu

In a city filled with green eating options, Wafu has dug out its own niche with a kitchen that creates Japanese food following macrobiotic principles. With white walls, blonde wood and lime green accents, the modest, bright room certainly doesn't distract attention from the wholesome food.

Across the menu, the use of wheat, dairy and refined sugar is eschewed, and you're urged to add okra, tofu or soybeans to your meal "for your health". A splash of green blackboard paint on the main wall lists an array of chalkboard specials. Staples such as agedashi tofu, bento boxes and soba noodles feature prominently, as well as more eclectic offerings, such as a delicious dish of hijiki seaweed mixed with soy and carrots, cooked with gluten-free tamari. Wafu's brown rice sushi rolls offer a definite change from the norm and feature intriguing fillings such as tart umeboshi plums and natto - Japan's pungent equivalent to Vegemite.

O'Brien gluten-free beers and Rosnay organic wines cater for drinkers with special dietary requirements, with a requisite amount of Japanese beers still available for the non-coeliacs (complete with an endearing apology for the gluten they contain). The dessert menu is similarly guilt-free, with such Asian-influenced specials as green tea tart or black sesame mousse.

Fantastic food at Wafu
I had my birthday dinner at Wafu last night. Yukako the Chef/Owner was so amazing about catering for my many, many food intolerances when we called ahead of time and went so far as to create a whole menu of options just for me! The food was awesome. Fresh, flavourful and beautifully presented. Definitely the best meal I have had in months and Yukako and her waitress couldn't have been more attentive. We will be going again and again. A wonderful meal. The atmosphere is reasonably austere but so clean and fresh. Great location and a chef who not only knows about but really cares about the food she creates and the people who eat it. Delicious. The hot sake and gluten free beer were fantastic to be able to have as well. A really great restaurant for anyone but completely awesome for coeliacs and others with food intolerances.
