Vue de Monde

Chef Shannon Bennett's fine French food is arguably as dramatic and intense as anything you will taste in Australia, and his open kitchen allows you to view its creation in all its theatrical splendour. At dinner there is no menu, and customers must lay themselves at the mercy of the chef for a flexible degustation of between five and 14 courses. Sounds risky? Perhaps it would be under a less skilled chef, but not here. The dishes read like a who's who of top-class ingredients (truffles, caviar, foie gras, etc), while other dishes are constructed of exciting and unusual combinations of ingredients assembled in atypical forms.
Adding to the sense of drama, each dish is served on a different type of plate (glass platter, anyone?). Located in an historic CBD building, the gorgeous restaurant space matches the glamour of the food - a fitting stage for this great performance. Experiences such as this don't come cheap, but thankfully Vue de Monde takes all major credit cards, so lay them out and wave the sommelier over for another glass of beautifully matched wine!

What an Experience??
My Partner a friend & I had the pleasure of dining here on Saturday. We chose the degustation menu with the arconic wines and was it a delight to behold. Every course held a flavour & complimented with the wellmatched wines was heavenly.Service & presentation supurb. One comment the wine was not enough considering the cost.

Has Vue gone too far?
Its always great to head to possibly Melbournes best restaurant but i wonder how frequently that will be from now. It still cost the same, the service is still brilliant, i hear 55 staff for 65 diners ona Saturday night, and its still a lovely place to be.
My problem is the food. No doubt is is cutting edge and real art on a plate, but i just fealt for half of the courses i wasnt eating food.. just some clever things on a plate. I did score 2 of the dishes 10/10 but the other 8 ranged from 8 to 2.
Will look forward to its new lofty location this year and hopefully some slightly more recognisable food.

Still a good Vue.
We try and get here a few times a year just for something different, which it always is.
I find it hit and miss as the food is so out there, you cannot love every dish. An expensive night out but worth it in my opinion. Outstanding service and the take away brekky for the next day is a great touch.
On a low, we paid $250 each for the food and $250 each for the top level degustation wine, so thats $1000 and our bill was $1008.. extra for 2 coffees, not good.

Have things gone too far too fast?
last night we we lucky enough to have a second visit to one of our favourite restaurants. However we left feeling that this experience didn't reach the same heady heights that we have have gushed over before. Shannons new direction towards sustainable produce has created a menu that lacks the punch. There is no doubting the skill in the kitchen, but we felt let down. The Degustation menu with wines is a must, but be prepared for loads of veges!I look forward to a happy balance in the future.

Wow Wow Wowww
WOW. Really love this place!!!!!
Except for their souffle. Too sweet for my liking but is probably loved by others. Light and fluffy I must say, so I guess it's of a high standard souffle.
I recommend that you should request for the type of desserts that you like though if you are not into sweet stuff like me. Probably can ask for berries type? Or chocolate sort? Or probably cheesecake sort of dessert (saw what the other table had and I was sooo jealous!!)

Lastly, highly recommended! An extraordinary experience!!!

Vue delight!
What an exquisite experience we had dining at Vue de Monde for the 3-course lunch.
Originating from Perth where the service at some fine dining restaurants can be a little pompous or arrogant, the service at Vue was a refreshing change and was simply in a league of it s own - we felt like food royalty! The charming waiters were incredibly attentive and informative with out being intrusive.
The food was amazing. As a vegetarian I was treated to a surprise main. On initial appearance I was a little disappointed with the presentation of what seemed like a dish of carrots and dehydrated mushrooms but how my initial scepticism was quickly diminished with my first mouthful of the declinaison de carottes taste sensation it was unlike anything I had experienced previously. The dish was exquisite.
For me Vue, was a once of, or special occasion only restaurant considering my day-to-day budget, but I would defiantly recommend all gourmet s treat themselves at least once for the delectable Vue experience! Receiving an email version of our menu gourmand was a lovely touch to remember our visit.

A must!
This is one restaurant you must go to before you die. Everything was absolutely exquisite from the food to the service. It was almost like a show in itself with the beautifully presented food and drinks.

Definitely try the degustation menu. It is an experience you will not regret.

WOW! de Monde
Had a birthday lunch, with a special friend at VDM & it was the best decision ever. We opted for the 3-course option, which together with 2 glasses of French bubbly, and an extra glass of wine,& a shared glass of dessert wine came to an imposing $350, but boy was it worth it.
The service from the time the door was opened to the time the door was closed was faultless, with the Maitre de & the waiter seamlessly servicing our table for 2.
And the food, not only was the presentation stylish (& different),the flavours & textures were superb. We planned to share all dishes, but after starting each course neither of us would pass the plate over, as it was that good. Dont be put off by the "plain menu" descriptors - each dish is a work of art, both to the eye the mouth.
Eat here because it's special, eat here because it's superb; just make sure you eat here at some stage in your dining career.

Absolutely Mind-Boggling
After having my partner rave about Vue de Monde for the past year since he last dined there..he finally took me there for our anniversary. We both love good food and good wine and have tried out many restaurants in Melbourne...but Vue de Monde truly is in a league of its own. Absolutely NOTHING was too much trouble. The menu was tailored to our likes and dislikes, the wine was matched perfectly and the service was like nothing else I've ever experienced in a Melbourne restaurant. Each course was eagerly awaited with excitement and not a single course disappointed. Yes, it's expensive...but oh so worth it...

mixed feelings
Left the restaurant feeling a bit disappointed all round. From the beginning my boyfriend and I found the waiters very overbearing/in your face.
I also didn't like the waiters choosing dishes for me - I trust Tetsuya to choose but the waiter unfortunately didn't choose the right dishes for me on the night and I feel this took a lot away from the experience.
The mushroom virtual gnocchi was sublime, a really great dish that seemed so complete. Another stunner was the pullet eggs inbetween courses - fantastic fun and amazingly delicious and memorable.
Also the floor manager was amazing and instinctively arrived at the moment i found a small chip in my water glass, loved his character.

Great restaurant yes, but a bit hit and miss, then again perhaps my expectations were too high.

A wonderful experience
I had this wonderful experience of dining at Vue De Monde. We went for dinner, with my son, his girfriend and my sister. This was indeed fine dining.
The food was wonderful, the service was friendly and attentive but it was a bit slow to start off.
The sommelier serving had a bit of problem, he had red wine dripping each time he serve, Vue De Monde should change the way wine is poured, to look into this problem? In the end he had to cover the spots with a napkin.
The desserts were so fabulous and beautiful that looking at them were enough.
We just couldn't eat any more, so our kind waiter gave us some to take away, what a wonderful gesture!
This waiter made everything beautiful and a night to remember!
Thank you.

Wonderful
This is the best restaurant I've been to in Australia. The food is as artistic as it is sublime to eat. Tableware, glasses and so forth are an experience in themselves. Service is knowledgeable, friendly and attentive without being intrusive.

The lunch set price menu is a relatively inexpensive way to experience the place - $55 for two courses or $70 for three, each with a matched glass of wine. By normal standard this is a pricey lunch but it's actually excellent value for food as fine as this.

What an experience!
Superb in every way. We had the four-course degustation menu for lunch where we left it in their hands what to give us. Having no menu to refer was at first unnerving but after the appetiser we left all those doubts aside and sat back and just enjoyed the amazing food.

Absolutely amazing experience
I had the great privilege of eating at Vue de Monde for my birthday and it was an amazing experience like no other. Everything was interesting and surprising and my tastebuds had no idea what hit them. The service was impeccable, and my only complaint was that with all the noise from the kitchen and restaurant we found it hard to hear the staff explaining the dishes. This was an amazing experience I will never forget.

Gastronomic aesthetics
Shannon Bennett, one of Melbourne's most highly prized chefs, ignited Melburnians' love for everything French with his old restaurant Vue de Monde in Carlton; where we were taken on a rollercoaster-taste sensation. Now at his new radiant premises at the Normanby Chambers, I have to say that the quality of the ingredients and service is still impeccable but Shannon's focus may have shifted more to the aesthetics of his creations and less on the consistency and well-rounded tastes of his creations, which I had thought, he had mastered in Carlton.

Unforgettable
Having sampled the best Sydney has to offer, I have to say they can't touch Vue de Monde. It was an experience like no other, the very open kitchen, the anticipation of what the next course would be, the attentive service and last but not least, the food. I could go on forever.
