Vlado's

Vlado's is one of the oldest and most respected steak houses in Melbourne. You won't find oven-roasted pumpkin risotto on the menu, nor any fancy-schmancy salads. Just wall-to-wall steak, done any which way you choose. What was that, you'd like the dessert menu? Sorry, chicksville is down that way.

Past its prime I'm afraid
I went with so much expectation - 20 years ago you couldn't get a table. But there are places doing steaks so much better now. The beef was not great quality and it's poorly cooked - I asked for mine medium rare and it arrived almost blue. I'd barely sat down and they had my first course in front of me - then my second course arrived before I'd finished my first. I was so disappointed. With a set menu and nothing on offer that isn't grilled it should be so simple. How they managed to mess it up so badly I'll never know.

Over Rated
I had great expectations, especially for the $80 a head price tag. Yes, they cook a good steak but they need to do more than that to make it a good restaurant experience. No effort at all was put into any of the other courses. The salad is pathetic and the dessert of starwberries, pancake, cream and ice-cream is little better.
As you may have guessed I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone.

Vlado's Richmond
I am not too sure what all the hype is about at Vlado's. Never before have I seen a plate of food served with nothing but a piece of meat on a plate. No garnish, no trimmings - just a peice of meat! Granted my steak was cooked perfectly and it was a nice cut of meat but others at the table did not quite have the degree of cooking nailed as you would expect for an $80 dinner.

The coleslaw that is provided at the table was a disgrace. I have never seen such a lack of passion put into a salad even if it is just coleslaw.

I must say I was in a big group and others I was with were very happy. One said it was the best steak she had ever had.

For me, a sausage (course 1 - a really good one at that) a few bite size pieces of meat (course 2) and a steak slapped on a plate (course 3) is an unacceptable deliverance for $80 per head. I admit I declined dessert (included in the $80) but it would not have made a difference in my opinion on this one. Overall, I left with a bad taste in my mouth despite the juicy porterhouse.

Outstanding
An incredible experience. The food is to die for, the service is fantastic, and the atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect. Vlado's is a Melbourne institution, and nothing has changed. If you love steak, or you just want an experience, you have to go to Vlado's.

Disappointed
Having a set menu was a little disappointing, especially when paying $80 per head. I had the eye fillet which was beautiful (melted in your mouth) but when your paying $80 per head you expect your meal to come out with more than just a piece of meat on a bare plate. Chips would be nice. The salad was very ordinary too... dessert was beautiful though.
The service was good although the place lacked atmosphere. I felt like it was 3 separate restaurants placed into one. They need to update their decor.

Must try for meat lovers
I rarely leave feedback, but this place is a must for those who love a great steak! Service was prompt, sat down & received the entree within a minute, steak melted in your mouth, take a big appetite & try the crepes, amazing! Livestock photo a little '80s for my taste. Overall excellent food!

Nice Steak
There is only one menu, I didn't know. The price is now $80 per head. The food remain the same, sausage, mix entree, steak of your choice, you can even add $30 for Wagyu beef and desert. For my opinion, skip the mix entree, it would be good if it's soup instead, can't finish all food. The desert was nice too, I had the strawberries crepe, they put all fresh and big and sweet strawberries in the crepe and serve with ice-cream. We ordered rare cooked porterhouse, it was nicely cook, quality of meat is good too. Should try!

Mecca for Meat Lovers
We had our 8 year anniversary dinner at Vlado's. I think the best tip we could give was don't eat anything for a day beforehand because you won't need to eat for 3 days afterwards! We recommend to book if you want a specific date as the night we went they filled up quite quickly. Greeted by very efficient waiters, all smartly dressed in black, table salad of lettuce, coleslaw and tomatoes as well as dinner rolls arrive promptly. It is a set menu for $75 per person (as at 25/11/06) and it consists of an appetiser of sausage (the best sausage I've ever had), entree of mixed grill (I'd skip on the calf liver, but that's just my personal preference), main of porterhouse (cooked to perfection, no matter how you like it), dessert of divine strawberry pancakes and tea or coffee. They tout themselves as 'red meat specialists' and that they are. Vlado's has been a Melbourne institution since 1964. You will see Vlado behind the grill, doing what he does best, in what can only be described as art - but with meat. Yes, there are pictures of cows on the walls, but the quality of food and the efficiency of service, more than makes up for the decoration! If you love meat, I can't recommend Vlado's highly enough. Give yourself at least 2 hours and wear loose fitting pants - you're guaranteed to need the room after a night at Vlado's.
