Viva


Look up a picture of "trattoria" in the dictionary and there will surely be a picture of one of Applecross's most proximate Italian restaurants, Viva. Stone lions spewing forth streams of water and a blazing woodfire oven greet patrons at the door, while traditional Chianti decanters adorn the rustic table settings. The specials of the day - trad Italian fare - are highlighted in chalk on blackboards around the walls.

Sure it's cliched, but the marriage of Italian comfort food in a familiar casa-style abode works well for the eatery, with the packs of families and party groups jostling for position each weekend. The special, goat, has so formidable a reputation that the kitchen normally runs out halfway through the night, while the servings of pasta are so gargantuan that guests often find themselves waving the white flag halfway through. Luckily, Viva offers takeaway. The pricing is in a time warp too, so you get plenty of bang for your buck.

Penny wise but pound foolish
Last evening with my wife,another couple and their 2 teenage children we tried 'Viva' for the first time.
We are VERY regular diners inand around the south of Perth and go back to our favourites on average once every 10 -14 days.
The first impression was very good, albeit that we were the first people to arrive. The staff were most attentive & efficient and we have no complaints in that regard. The food similarly was of a high standard with more than ample quantities to satisfy the hungriest of people. The youngest member of our party could not finish her main and was impressed with the taste enough to ask our waitress if she could take the rest home for her school lunch the next day. What came next still stuns me...We were advisedthat that was not a problem, however there would be a surcharge of forty cents to cover the cost of a take away container (available from most wholesalers at approx 15cents each). We paid the forty cents together with a further $240 approximately for 6 people.
(This experience was almost as bad as being charged an extra 50cents in another Italian Restaurant for grated parmesan cheese to go with a dish of pasta).
The verdict: On principle, we would NOT return to this restaurant because of their petty attitude & meanness.
They have covered the cost of their plastic container and made a profit on same, but have lost 4 adult & 2 teenage repeat customers in the future.
What a great pity that the size of the meals is not matched by intelligent common sense. How could any restaurant justify an extra 40 cents when they have just received over $240 from 1 table.
