The portico at Villa Romana is well-lit and almost as inviting as the tables on the pavement with their blazing gas heaters. There are 22 pasta dishes on offer, as well as a hearty selection of original pizza recipes. Two dishes stand out as original takes on meals normally overlooked because of their ubiquity. Good old roast duck is resuscitated in an amaretto and plum sauce, while the Camembert cheese chicken breast, stuffed with that mild, soft wonder is accentuated by a cream and herb sauce and baby spinach.
The specials board always bears surprises, such as twice cooked crumbed lamb's brains (rule number 238 of first dates says not to order this under any circumstances) on rocket. But the lobster linguini, aristocracy of pasta, should suffice. In a menu with most of the usual Italian staples, Villa Romana manages to keep things interesting enough with their mains and specials to warrant more than one visit.

Not a great night
Called in for mains only Garlic bread did not have enough butter and had raw galic on top overall tasteless. My wife had the pork cotolette which was undercooked on a bed of boiled mushroom and spinach with no seasoning whatsoever -bland. I had spaghetti scoglio which looked ok but again was tasteless and the seafood in shell had to be brocken and eaten without a hand bowl to stay clean so by the end of the meal my hands were covered in oil. Overall the establisment looks good but we cannot recommend eating here on value for money or quality

Worth a Try
Food was great, nice italian home made style dishes. Little slow on the food coming out & bit pricey - great for a special occasion. Must try.

Good Overall - reviewed by partner
One more thing to add. Though the food was ok, it was over priced given the quality. The $100 total for an entree, two main meals, a beer and wine, was just a little too much..

Good Overall
I took my partner here for his birthday, he was unfortunately not as happy with is meal as I with mine. We had the bruschetta to start with, which was nice. He ordered the veal scallopini with mushroom sauce, beans and mash, while I ordered the Morton Bay Bug linguini special. Mine was lovely, the Morton Bay Bugs were soft and juicy, and the linguni was as I like it, firm and not too soft. His main was cold and slightly overcooked, the plate was not warm, the veal didn't look like veal, it was tougher and darker in colour, the potatoes were cold and floury. He is a big fan of scallopini so expected a lot. We will give it another go though, maybe not the scallopini...

Not bad for a Lygon St Restaurant
This place seems like a typical tourist trap offering that is common on that side of Lygon Street. However, it doesn't have those annoying people that try to talk you into going inside the restaurant.
We've been to Villa Romana a bunch of times and the food is pretty good. However I reserve the good rating for their seafood dishes - non-seafood dishes can be ordinary. The Linguini Marsigliese dish is simply awesome - we've gone back a couple of times just to have this dish. It's one of the best pasta dishes I've tried.
Atmosphere is ok. Gets busy but it's quite ok.
Overall, I'd definitely go back for some of the seafood dishes.
