Just an hour south of Adelaide sits the classy but unpretentious Victory Hotel. It's famous for three reasons - the view, the food and the wine - and, after extensive refurbishment, the Victory Hotel has also proven itself to be a modern pub with true style. Chef Todd Steele keeps the menu fresh with local seafood, such as the light, succulent beer-battered King George whiting with hand-made tartare. Other favourites include the Myponga Beach salt and pepper squid, and the Coorong Angus eye fillet with potato gratin, broccolini, horse radish creme and a McLaren Vale Shiraz glaze.
Owner Doug Govan has received top praise in the media year after year for his impressive cellars. Diners are encouraged to browse the shelves beneath the bar for a wine to have with dinner. Decades of Penfolds Grange sit alongside modestly-priced local stars and international wines, sure to be a treat for oenophiles.

Great
We arrived at the Victory without a booking and naturally it was completely full, we were advised to wait and hopefully something would come up, knowing how good the food was we decided to wait. Within 30minutes we were offered a table outside next to a heater (fantastic given the weather was unusually cold). The service was prompt and friendly. One member ordered steak (medium-rare), another ordered the lamb special and I ordered the Wagyu Steak (medium) with King Prawns special. It was lovely that they provided us with pre-meal bread and the food arrived not long after. All members enjoyed their meals with little complaint (my steak was a little under but was eatable and the rest of the meal, including giant king prawns, made up for it). Lunch was followed by dessert for me (Sticky Date) and Coffee for others... fantastic. The views were fantastic and the cost was VERY reasonable for the quality. Would recommend to all visitors to the area.

What a Mecca
The Victory would have to be one of the must do places south of the city. An unpretentious pub, which seems to be the local watering hole for most of the McLaren Vale winemaking community. This is not surprising considering that this place would have to have one of the best wine cellars in Australia, at prices that would astound most in the know. The food is fantastic and at a quality level that would surpass most restaurants. The menu ranges from simple pub food, to interesting and inventive offerings of locally sourced ingredients. The cellar is backed up by great wine service with all the proper glass wear and decanters to breather the top flight Burgundy or Bordeaux you have just purchased from the cellar. Get there early or on sunset and enjoy a glass of French bubbles or a beer while watching the sunset over the southern coastline.
