With Balmain's long history of traditional pubs, it was only a matter of time before the wine-bar movement infiltrated. Thankfully, 2041's first foray into small bars has been done consummately well.
There's a moody feel to the fit-out of Vice. Not a vibe to suggest it is a place of loose morals and debauched behaviour, more the dark sophistication of a film-noir set: brooding, enigmatic and enticing all at the same time.
The layout is loosely sectioned into casual meals downstairs and wine appreciation upstairs, although barriers are not strictly enforced. As you may imagine, the Vice wine list is a stellar collection of old- and new-world drops chosen with an eye for detail, while food plays a less important role without doing an injustice to the overall quality of the venue. The succinct menu is mostly comprised of nibbles to quaff wine by - charcuterie, grissini and their ilk - augmented by more substantial plates that still lend themselves to sharing, as the manifesto for all new wine bars dictates.
