Be proud Perth
One of the biggest complaints (it seems) is that Perth does not have many, if any, good restaurants compared with Sydney or Melbourne. My view, as a Sydneysider of 3 years, is get over yourselves, Perth has the benefit of much better quality food than either Sydney or Melbourne and it shown in the quality of the eateries. The idea is that you need to look around for the ones that make the effort (and this applies regardless of which city you reside).

In all of our visits to Veritas we have not been disappointed. Our last visit in August was an absolute joy as we shared a glass with the owner and sang the praises of Sicilian influences in the cuisine.

I really don't like the "fast food" service that bedevils Sydney eateries - Dinner is an experience and a sharing. It cannot be hurried along. It has it's own timeline. And that is what you get. No more are we forced to ask the kitchen to wait between our courses. They come with sufficient pause. No more are we hurried along due to double bookings of the table. We can sit and have a real conversation.

Essentially, the dishes offered at Veritas are well thought out and good value for money given the care with which they are prepared. The wine list - a very important part of any eating establishment - is well thought out and complements the dishes well.

If you want a night a little above the cheap and cheerful, you cannot go wrong with Veritas.

Pleasantly surprised
We dined for the first time at Veritas with friends and being difficult customers to impress as we all hold high expectations, we were each very impressed with the resturant as a whole. From the moment our shared entrees were served we were in heavan. The service was spot on, our waitress was pleasant, attentive and able to offer a personal recomendation, every meal was exceptional and the wine list was brave.

Beautiful restaurant, will definitely be dining there more often.

Ok
I've walked past Veritas many a time and finally had my chance to go there. I don't mind paying more for food if what I get is absolutely fantastic - however whilst my dish wasn't bad, I didn't think a chicken breast warranted a price tag of $40. However my partner quite enjoyed his meal. I also feel insulted and taken advantage of when I am charged $8.50 for a bottle of water. So not bad, but not fantastic!

They've dropped the ball
Having been to this restaurant once before and having had a good experience, we decided to repeat it. What a disappoinment.

The main gripe? We were seated at 8.15. We did not get our main meal until 10.05pm. That's nearly 2 hours later.

To start with, the drinks service was slow. It took us a while to get the waiter's attention and then another 15 minutes to get a drink.

The bread that we'd asked for came about half an hour later.

We ordered one entree plate to share between three of us. This was a cold plate so didn't require any real preparation.

We then waited for another hour for our mains to arrive. We had ordered only 3 dishes and there were no special requests.

The food was fair but not great - although admittedly we had lost our appetite by that point.

The waiter was very friendly but clearly couldn't make up for the shortcomings in staff numbers or the kitchen.

When we complained to the manager, she advised us that the beef which we had ordered takes 35 minutes to cook. (This was interesting as the waiter had warned us that the risotto takes 40 minutes to prepare which is why we opted for the beef instead.)

Even if the beef took that long to cook, given that our orders were in well before 9pm there was no real reason it took another hour to get to the table.

Most disappointing was that there was no apology or acknowledgement of the poor service.

Beautiful
Veritas is truly a fantastic restaurant.

Its quiet, clean and sophisticated decor preceeds simply excellent food. Well-priced and with fantastic service rivalling the best that Perth has to offer, this is definitely a reliable place to impress your friend, partner, or out-of-towner.

The restaurant is in fact quite small (perhaps 8 - 10 tables), yet well laid out to afford a comfortable and intimate setting, particularly if you are a couple.

The food was excellent, from portion size, to taste, to presentation. The menu offers a simple, yet varied, selection of modern unconfronting dishes that all Australians should enjoy.

Veritas maintains a simple, yet varied, wine list (also well-priced). My only gripe could be that there were not more wine available by the glass.

Service was fantastic, and attentive. The waitress was knowledgeable on the food (we asked several questions), and was even able to construct a (shared) tasting plate for our group of three from the entree dishes. She was always at hand to clear dirty plates, top up our water, and take further orders. We did encounter some (not unreasonable) delay when attempting to get the bill, to which she promptly apologised (I'm not sure that I've received an apology from someone in hospitality since last year!).

Coffee was also fantastic, rivalling the many great cafes along the stip.

Definitely will be dining here again.

Perfect all around
This was our first stop upon arriving from the USA. We had the rabbit loin and john dory, and the meals were amazing. Service was excellent, responsive and attentive. Compared to other city locations, prices were very reasonable given the quality of the product.

We would gladly go back on our next visit from Melbourne.

Great food to finish off my late evening
I arrived quite late, to my friend already waiting with a bottle of wine. I ordered the prawns to start followed by the chicken breast. The prawns were indeed small but full of flavour. The chicken breast didn't let me down either. I thought altogether the food and the atmosphere were super. Though the down lights could have been pointed elsewhere (not in my face). Service, style, super satisfactory.

Highgate highlight
Brilliant! A wonderful little eatery; I'm not sure how I lived in Perth without it.

Succulent squid and chorizo salad to start and several perfectly cooked fish dishes later; Veritas does more than standard modern Italian cooking, it's done with a twist! The wine list is quite impressive, both by the glass and bottle. The service is warm and friendly, making you feel like the only customers in the establishment.
