Verge

Sitting on a corner overlooking Fitzroy Gardens, the Denton Corker Marshal designed Verge inhabits a dramatic, uncluttered space with a downstairs bar, a second level dining room and the top floor restaurant. Dallas Cuddy is in command of the kitchen and in the tradition of the previous chef (and continuing co-owner) Karen White, his food is exquisitely light and clean. He has also added a strong Japanese influence to the dishes - a result of his past experience at London's Nobu. Simon Denton runs the floor like a master tactician and, as one of Australia's best sommeliers, will recommend the perfect liquid accompaniment for your meal.

Excellent dinner experience
My husband and I enjoyed a memorable dinner at Verge. Having read previous reviews I hed some concerns about how we would enjoy the night but it was excellent. The food was amazing. If you like simple uncomplicated flavours don't go there but if you like to experience different tastes that combine to make a pleasing whole this restaurant does creative dining beautifully. Saturday night is degustaion only - the courses were perfectly timed and we left the restaurant well content and we are big eaters. Unlike other degustation menus there is a good choice of dishes for each course.
The restaurant is quite crowded but the staff on a busy night were friendly, efficient and humerous.
Would we go back? Can't wait!

Verging on Disaster
An appalling experience. Agree with previous reviewers-> in particular arrogant service and long delay for meals. Excess use of foam on all dishes with little substance. Completely ignored when we complained. At such high prices, would recommend you go elsewhere!

Overrated
Verge is a classic case of a restaurant trying too hard. It's all about the presentation, the twist being food as art. The dishes did look extraordinary and we had the 5 course tasting menu, but once you saw beyond the presentation....the food lacks the innovation and flavour expected from a restaurant that has been so well awarded. Overrated and pretentious

Anticapointment
The service was wonderful, the resulting food not worth the effort.
Have lived in Japan and found the twists on the food interesting, which is good, but somewhat mis-informed which resulted in flavours sometimes fighting instead of gracing each other.
Sommelier's advice was wonderful, resulted in two great wines. Unfortunately it did not justify the final combined price.
This visit resulted in a a general feeling of anticapointment, disappointing my anticipation.
I will not return.

i expected more from a reputable melbourne restaurant.
We were seated quickly, without a smile or a friendly "hello, yes you've booked, welcome to our restaurant, glad to have you". What we got was a blank face from the waiter, who showed us to our very small table, not overlooking the gardens as advertised on the internet, but in a very narrow, stuffy corridor with bad ventilation, inches away from the waiters' station with the clicking and clacking of the till machine and the computer and a collection of dirty glasses.

As it was our one-year anniversary, I decided to not let this table position bother me too much, and began to look through the menus. It was a good ten minutes before we were attended to - our waitress seemed to think it was more important to clear and re-set the table that had just left beside us than to greet us and get us a couple of drinks.

Once we ordered, the service was smoother - with timing being mostly very good. My husband's entree of Gyoza scallop was very silky and had great flavour, a dish that I think captured that Japanese/Euro hybrid that the chef seems to be aiming for with this restaurant. Our entrees were well accompanied with a nice bottle of Italian pinot grigio.

Unfortunately the mains were not so special. How many restaurants I have been to that serve me a rather ho-hum meat dish - in this case, lamb- with a sweet glaze, some soft greens and almonds thrown in for texture. On top of this the lamb was overcooked and I struggled to cut it with my blunt knife.

The night drawing to a close, I was feeling that the whole experience had been rather strange. Our waitress was unfriendly and tense, the food was hit and miss and a little confusing, and the atmosphere was awkward/unwelcoming. For me, it is a restaurant lacking warmth.

Great food but the service wasn't there.
I had reasonably high hopes for this restaurant given that it has had some good reviews, unfortunately the service we received was not that good.

What should have been a nice evening left me and my partner feeling like we wanted to leave early. To top it off when a TV personality arrived, the staff fell over themselves to serve, leaving us waiting longer than appropriate for our mains and dessert.

As for the food, the entrees and mains we had were delicious, the dessert was bland which ended the evening on a low note, as well as having to repeatedly ask for the bill.
