Velero

A few years on from its grand opening and Velero is still one of the top offerings on Woolloomooloo's star-studded Finger Wharf. There have been a few changes - they've dropped the Italian slant to the menu and gone all-out Spanish - but this place is still firing on all cylinders.

Start things off right here with a selection of cured meats and cheeses before moving onto the more substantial fare. The jamon iberico is criminally addictive, as is the murcia al vino goat's cheese. As we've come to expect from sommelier Gary Armstrong, he has produced a stellar wine list of New World drops befitting his place among some of the best somms in the country. Expect to see fresh albarinos, delicate tempranillos and a bountiful list of Old World champagnes rounding out the offerings here.

  • Gourmet Traveller 2010 Australian Restaurant Guide - "Our tip is to take the Spanish road without detouring to Italy, tempting as it may be. Grab an outdoor table and indulge in a spot of people-watching (hard to resist on glamorous Woolloomooloo Wharf). "
  • Gourmet Traveller Feature Review - "The food is half-Spanish and half-Italian but mercifully not often on the same plate. Mining the Iberian side of things, you may wonder why they bother with the Italian stuff, given that there's no shortage of upmarket Italian around the place"
