Since opening in 1997, this place has gathered a huge following of vegetarians from the Box Hill area and well beyond who love the vegetarian and vegan-friendly Asian dishes (strict Buddhists are also catered for here, with no onion or garlic used) that are made with mock meat, chicken and fish in place of the real deal - they even serve fake shark-fin soup!
It's high praise indeed that many meat eaters say they can't tell the difference between the dishes here and their real-meat equivalent at other Chinese restaurants. The meat replacements were invented after years of research right here in the Vegie Hut kitchen and continue to be prepared in-house from natural ingredients such as soya beans, gluten, mushrooms, taro and yams. It's a lot of fun to see and taste the innovative things these guys do to trick our minds into thinking we're eating meat, though vegos who don't miss meat at all can still order from plenty of more traditional tofu and vegetable dishes on the menu. The vegetarian dim sum put on here every Sunday is extremely popular and good fun for vegos and non-vegos alike.
