When Universal opened in 1991 it was an instant hit with Adelaide's glam set. The novelty might have worn off now, but this is still a top destination, especially for those who appreciate good wine. The heavy tome of a wine list contains more than 300 drops sourced from around the world. While oenophiles are more than welcome to just trawl methodically through the wine list, the food at Universal is also well worth a look. Diners can go down the entree/main route, or tuck into a platter of olives, homemade pate, prosciutto, marinated vegetables, squid and oysters.

Best looking manager I've ever seen.
First thing i saw was this amazing looking italian man pacing the floor. He introduced himself as Dom, he's just started but it seems he has a lot to bring. the service was fantastic.. and this is not just because of his charm ;) the new tapas menu was great.. we went as a group and let the chef choose a few courses for us at a very reasonable price.. and we really enjoyed the night. we were able to sit back.. not worry about whos ordering what. the food came out as the night went on and we sat back and listened to some live music (wednesday night!) we all had a great night.. great food.. and great WINE. I really reccommend ordering the chefs selection.. about $40 for 6 courses of great tapas per person. they brought enough for each person (unlike some places where you get three portions and 4 people are at the table). we were all very satisfied and had a great night!

Exceptional
Universal Wine Bar is definitely one of my favourite restaurants! The wine list is probably one of the best in Adelaide. I also throughly enjoyed the food. The spatchcock was to die for! However, the ambience is what really sets this place apart from the rest. The Wednesday night live band really gets things going. I will defintely return!

Very average food, slow service
My wife and I went to the Universal Wine Bar for a Sunday lunch. My wife ordered a three cheeses baked rigatoni, while I ordered a baked mulloway fillet with a caramelized onion tartlet. We waited for 45 minutes for our food to arrive. The rigatoni was lukewarm, and the pasta was overcooked to the point of being mushy. The fish was cooked quite well, but the tartlet was unusually made from sweet shortcrust pastry. It is unlikely we would return in the future.

Well..... !
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for this place, as it has a great wine list and they know how to serve wine (not that hard but so many places have no idea). The food is good but not great. Nothing wrong , but nothing to get excited about either. There where some interesting dishes, and some that best belonged on a pub menue.
