Let's be perfectly clear: There are cafes that serve Italian food and then there are Italian cafes and the two are worlds apart. This one sits firmly in the latter category.
Decking out a narrow space with wood-panelling may give it a bit of a bowling alley look but that makes no difference at Umberto because the old-school Italian cafe vibe here is unmistakable. It's not the dedicated band of nonnos that come in to reminisce, the rich and robust Italian-style Genovese coffee they drink or the family recipes that make up the majority of the menu. It's that quintessentially Italian feeling that this place is what it is and won't change to suit passing trends. It does what it does and does it with pride.
