Uccello

Italian cooking maestro Eugenio Riva has finally returned to a kitchen in Sydney to delight the Italophiles at Uccello, a crowning addition to Ivy's sprawling second building - and that means Italian-style fine dining with an emphasis on sexy. Seductively overlooking Ivy's centrepiece pool, the restaurant mirrors most of what you'll see in the complex: forward-thinking decor with a touch of whimsy. Nostalgic gestures like stacked wood, exposed rustic bricks and bowls of fresh yellow lemons add warmth to an otherwise fairly minimalist white room.

As you can expect from the man responsible for the cult-status grub at Lucio's and Riva Ristorante, the food is stellar. Regional Italian cuisine lovers will fall head over heels for Riva's pappardelle with rabbit ragout, porcini mushrooms, asparagus and crispy sage; while fans of Mediterranean seafood (who isn't?) will wax lyrical about dishes like a pan-roasted fillet of coral trout with a spring vegetable salad and tarragon salsa verde. For a truly luxe Ivy experience, take advantage of one of the myriad of bars before booking into one of four poolside cabanas for some of Sydney's celebrated Italian.

The allure of the Ivy!
Eat at The Ivy @ Ucello and you're basically getting lured into Ivy hype! The decor is splendid and sets the mood however it is the food that doesn't add up. Massimo Bianchi from the outstanding Buon Ricordo, is now at Uccello so you are immediately sold on quality yet the experience seems worlds apart.
We asked for signature dishes from the waiter and went happily with recommendations. For entree we ordered the Suppli- rice balls with chicken ragu and mozzarella along with Filetti di baccali -salted cod fillets both $14. The rice balls where three pieces and our teeth dived into uncooked rice. The dory was deep-fried fritters that where all crunch and little fish. Our mains were well presented but it was style over substance. We ordered the Bistecchina of beef medallions $40 yet appeared to actually translate into two pieces of a minute steak fillet...arriving cold. The Flinders Island roast lamb cutlets with garlic rosemary and white wine $42 were lovely and tender. All mains are served with garlic roast potatoes yet we didn t expect to be given a small plate for 6 people to share...literally 3-4 potatoes each! Classic desert Vanilla pannacotta with cinnamon poached peaches $16 seemed like a perfect way to end dinner yet you couldn't taste a hint of vanilla nor cinnamon.
Nonetheless, Uccello is a gorgeous-looking space, lit well with a casual relaxed elegance. For the most part, dishes are stifled and prices are high considering the portions. Yes it's a new restaurant and there are teething problems and it's something that cannot go unnoticed. It lacks warm hospitality that many would relate to Italian dining, and most importantly the food is subdued and stingy. I'm sure things will improve but dining at Uccello really encouraged me - a novice food critic - enough to write my first review. It pains me to say it yet if I can just save fellow food lovers their time, money and nerve to just not bother and head straight to your local pizzeria if you feel like Italian food!

new italian in town
To be greeted at the George St entrance of the ivy complex by a group of young beautiful people armed with clipboards can seem a little unusual, however the personal attention of one of them escorting us up to the restaurant was a nice start to the evening. The restaurant itself is an attractive mixture of rustic ( wood for the oven stacked up one wall ) & the modern ( white leather banquettes )with one end of the room opening up to overlook the new Pool Club.
The menu on Saturday nights is a 3 course minimum ( $100 ) & this was explained to us upon booking. The food was produce driven & very tasty, although the enjoyment was slightly diminished by the 25min wait between entree & main courses, with no apology or explanation. Staffing levels are high & the restaurant not quite full, which made the lack of attention from the staff very suprising. The Italian accents & charm of the waiters failing to compensate for the uninspired wine recommendations & vauge explanations of menu items. When every order for a glass of wine takes 2 requests to arrive the result is going to be lost income for the venue as customers decide the water on the table is an easier option. I can only hope the service issues are resolved with time because otherwise this is a venue I would like to visit again.
