Tsunami

This drop-dead cool sushi bar realises that modern Japanese culture and cuisine has about as much connection to kimono-clad geishas as Australia has to swagmen. As such, this room is all techno-chic and self-effacing fun. Dishes on the menu are described with a pinch of dry humour and some even classed as 'not recommended'. Fortunately, there's something here for every taste, and the range of stylish sushi and sashimi is divine.

I don't know what the below reviews are on about...
I was tasked with finding a Japanese restaurant by a mate that visits WA to dine with me once in a while.
Read all the reviews and menus, was intriuged by Tsunami's menu but a bit put off by the reviews. Took a punt though and it was a winner.
He ordered the sashimi and sushi plate whilst I had the tsunami roll for entree, boy were we suprised by the freshness and exocticness of the dishes. I lived in Japan for a year, by the way, and I had never seen such pretty dishes put in front of me.
For mains he had the wagyu stone whilst I had the Hitori Sukiyaki. We spent at least an hour eating and savouring our dishes, trying to fit every yummy morsel into our mouths and stomachs.
Cold sake for 2 and green tea icecream to finish off.
There was no problem with service either, waiters were always around if you needed them whilst the front part of the restaurant was packed.
Rated less for the atmosphere because there was almost nothing Japanese about it but hey, it was clean and nice.
If your not looking for the novelty chuck stuff at ya jap restarant but a yummy fresh beautiful food jap inspired restaurant, give tsunami a go.

Overpriced for what it is...
Ok atmosphere, and a well presented dining experience.

For entree we ordered the exotic sushi, a scollops dish and enoki mushrooms. Well presented and tasty dishes. The mains were less appealing. We ordered the patagonian toothfish 'karai' and a salmon dish. The toothfish was well cooked, but bland and the only palatable item on the plate. It was served with dry fried rice and eggplant which wasn't to the taste of the diner. The salmon was served in a large portion with noodles and the two went together well.

If you go I recommend trying the Tsunami Punch as that was a nice non alcoholic drink, the 'virgin' tea, whose name escapes me and the warm sake to complete the japanese experience.

Summing up. The sushi, sashimi and entree is of better than average. The mains were fair. final bill was a little overpriced we felt for the experience. There are better places for the price (although maybe no japanese)

Good but not great
Tsunami is definitely an off-beat eatery! They rate their own food. One star - good, two - very good, with a cross indicating not recommended (then why put it on your menu?!). Once you get past that, the menu is very interesting, offering a few wagyu beef options as well as several Patagonian toothfish dishes in addition to the traditional sashimi/sushi/tempura meals.

Entree ordered was enoki mushrooms wrapped in wagyu beef with raw lotus plant and a sweet sauce. It was a very good choice, and a perfect size for a starter. My dining partner and I both ordered two different styles of the Patagonian toothfish. It was cooked well and tasty but fairly flavourless. For a seafood dish, the price was moderate. I did leave slightly disheartened as I had heard amazing things about Tsunami, but a good night out on the whole.

Utterly disappointed..
They had a function going on but we weren't informed until we were asking after our meal after a 90-minute wait. The waiter said it would take another 10 to 15 minutes so we waited another 20 minutes and we left without having our meal. It cost $70 for green tea and two plates of sashimi - with very poor service. They did not even apologise for their bad service.

Could Try Harder
Maybe we picked wrong, meals were okay but over-priced. Novelty value seemed the watch word here.
