2 July 2007, 10.43pm
Birthday at Tonic
Went for a meal with 5 people to Tonic on a Monday night in the school holidays. There were only 3 other couples in the restaurant when we arrived at 7.40pm.
Firstly, we went to order our wine, however found many on the list were unavailable. We also later discovered that we were charged for ordering water to start!
As a starter we ordered a Turkish bread and a trio of dips to share. While there was plenty of bread to share, the dips were very plain and unadventurous (whipped butter, salt and balsamic vinegar). The entree to follow was oysters Kilpatrick. These were lovely and hot and delicious!
Unfortunately, the mains were disappointing. T of the group ordered seafood risotto, that arrived 5 mintues at least before everyone else's meal. So by the time we got to eat it, it was cold. However, could see some potential in this dish. This hiccup spoilt the meal for everyone at the table! Another 2 members had scallops and ox cheek. Very rich dish, that was enjoyed but soured by the fact others meals were cold whilst wainting for this dish. The final member of the group had atlantic salmon, which was found to be lovely. The delay in meals arriving all at once was mentioned to the wait staff, however no further action was taken.
There was no lactose or gluten-free desserts on the menu. However, when his was pointed out to the chef, he offered a satisfactory sorbet from one of the other desserts. The other members of the group enjoyed a passionfruit souffle. Coffees were hot and soy milk was available.
Overall, the night could have been so much more, had it not been spoilt by the late arrival of meals.
