Breakfast addict - new found spot
Like a lot of Brisbanites I love to have breakfast out on the weekend and am always looking for a new place to eat. I had heard that Tonic had undergone a change in ownership recently and decided to stroll down to the better end of Oxford Street (think peace, calm and river views).

I decided to sit up at the bar overlooking the street and river, catching the breeze as I read my paper and put away my scrambled eggs and bacon with a soy cap on the side. The staff (new) are all pleasant and not overbearing - just the way I prefer on a Sunday morning.

The new owner introduced himself which was a nice touch, and seemed excited about the changes (new menu and staff) being put in place.

The food came extremely quick - the fastest I've ever had at Tonic - it was fresh and the coffee was excellent.

Overall I walked away completely relaxed, having read my paper from front to back and content on a full stomach. Will bring back my dogs next week as there is a spot for them out the front of the restaurant on the pavement.

Great food, great sunset
Recently tried Tonic, being surprised to find that there was a waterfront restaurant on the Southside.

We got there just before sunset, parking the car in Tonic's basement carpark (hard to find these days!). We were able to snatch a great table close to the river. Gotta say this has to be one of the best locations (particularly on the southside) any time of the day - where else do you get to see the sun set over the water unless you go to the beach and mortgage the house for dinner!

Anyway, we were greeted at the door by the new owner. Service was as you would expect (and nothing less) as we sat and offered water (tap, still or sparkling) and/or a drink to start.

We ordered entrees and mains and must say that the quality was excellent. We had bread and scallops to begin, then eye fillet and seafood risotto. Meals could have arrived a touch earlier, but we weren't complaining with a view like this!

Food was very tasty and well presented and the wine list was surprisingly good with a price spread. Onto desserts to finish off with and the souffle was awesome. Coffees were hot and the girl that served us was great.

All up we (two of us) had three courses with a good bottle of wine for around $150 and the million dollar view came at no charge. Next time we might take the ferry and leave the car at home, but we will definitely be back.

Birthday at Tonic
Went for a meal with 5 people to Tonic on a Monday night in the school holidays. There were only 3 other couples in the restaurant when we arrived at 7.40pm.

Firstly, we went to order our wine, however found many on the list were unavailable. We also later discovered that we were charged for ordering water to start!

As a starter we ordered a Turkish bread and a trio of dips to share. While there was plenty of bread to share, the dips were very plain and unadventurous (whipped butter, salt and balsamic vinegar). The entree to follow was oysters Kilpatrick. These were lovely and hot and delicious!

Unfortunately, the mains were disappointing. T of the group ordered seafood risotto, that arrived 5 mintues at least before everyone else's meal. So by the time we got to eat it, it was cold. However, could see some potential in this dish. This hiccup spoilt the meal for everyone at the table! Another 2 members had scallops and ox cheek. Very rich dish, that was enjoyed but soured by the fact others meals were cold whilst wainting for this dish. The final member of the group had atlantic salmon, which was found to be lovely. The delay in meals arriving all at once was mentioned to the wait staff, however no further action was taken.

There was no lactose or gluten-free desserts on the menu. However, when his was pointed out to the chef, he offered a satisfactory sorbet from one of the other desserts. The other members of the group enjoyed a passionfruit souffle. Coffees were hot and soy milk was available.

Overall, the night could have been so much more, had it not been spoilt by the late arrival of meals.

Tonic
The service at Tonic on the night I dined was full-on with a dash of overkill. There is something to be said about understated but efficient service. The maitre also upsold his product by telling us he would bring us some bread to make our decisions over and charged us for same without advising us of the fact. He also did this with the water which was $5.50 a bottle (although he never opened a bottle in front of us). If we had been advised of the charge we would have asked for tap water.

The food was OK, however a nice mash with the duck would have been preferred over the lentils and salad it came with. It is comfort food weather at the moment after all. The passionfruit souffle was nice but the amount of oil at the bottom was quite scary!

Although the river view was nice and the food of average quality, the service really let it down and my guests and I will not be making a return trip down this end of Oxford Street.
