Tongue & Groove

Describing this new entertainment venue as "industrial-chic," doesn't do justice to the enormity of the space which is both pizza joint and pub. The massive concrete beams stand around the cavernous room like sentinels keeping watch of the trendy clientele as they nibble and drink their way to contentment.

The menu offers pizza options such as slow-roasted lamb, caramelised onion, sliced potato, rucola and a fresh mint and yoghurt dressing; or marinated anchovies with bocconcini, tomato, garlic, basil and olive oil. For dessert, the team at Tongue & Groove have trademarked a special dessert - the pizookie, a pizza-sized cookie topped with vanilla ice cream and lashings of white chocolate and dribbles of peanut butter.

Great food & service, very accommodating of my special diet
I'm on a special gluten free soy free diet for health reasons and I have found eating out to be very difficult since starting this diet.
So what a pleasant surprise it was to find the staff at T&G were so extremely accommodating to my dietary needs. They took the time to go through the options available to me and listed alternatives. They coated the calamari in tapioca (I think?) flour rather than wheat flour, just for me, and substituted two items on the menu with other options so that I could eat everything on the platter.
I was very impressed with the lengths they went to to accommodate me. The food was really really good, and the service excellent.

To staff
Thank you for making my 21st the greatest night I, my friends and family have ever ever enjoyed.
The food was Superb. A plentiful tasty variety, Specially catered for by professionals, satisfying the taste buds of a muticultural list of guests, Egyptians,Greek,Chinese,Polish,Bungladesh,Sri Lankan, New Zealand and Australian, from Canberra and interstate.
Stress free, every thing organised in perfect detail only a professional is capable of. A part of the restaurant was sectioned off from, other patrons, for my family and guests, enabling us to enjoy a private function with a combined party atmosphere when the music started pumping.
The service was perfect, second to none, I felt like a Princess, my family treated like Royalty. Ohhhh and the drinks what can I say about the drinks, cocktails ummmmmm, shots yummm, variety absolutely.
If you haven't been, you don't know what your missing.
I would recommend a visit to Tongue & Groove for a social, stress free function for all occasions.

Thank you

Beware
We went to T&G around 1.00pm. The place was almost empty. Our orders were taken promptly but our meals did not arrive for an hour. While the meat special was cooked to our requirements the presentation left a bit to be desired - a piece of meat on mashed potato and no other vegies. I feel the prices are a bit rich for what you get. The specials board out front said you get a glass of wine with your meal but we had to ask for this. When paying the bill I found I was charged for these complimentary glasses. I wont be going back.

What's going on with this place?
After reading the previous reviews we decided to go T&G a go on a Monday night. Lovely atmosphere clean and tidy with friendly staff, that's the good news. Unfortunately things got a bit untidy as soon as we ordered drinks. 2 glasses of red wine turned up instead of 1 and a lovely bottle of chilled rose rather than a a pinot gris as had been ordered. After a bit of confusion the correct wine was produced. We were asked if we would like to order to which we politely declined saying we would like to have a drink first. Less than 5 mins later another waitress approached and asked if we were ready to order, we repeated drink first please. Unbelievably a couple of mins later another waitress approached wanting to take our order, we snapped to it and made our selections which proved to be not so easy. Dining with a vegan is always problematic but with a vegetarian pizza it should be a snap. Not so, the request for no cheese on the pizza had to be cleared with the kitchen and the request for anchovies on another pizza was dismissed with a 'we don't add to our pizzas'. Fair enoguh, the order was changed to a chicken pie. 3 meals turned up and a 5 mins wait for the 3rd, a pizza. Pizzas were bland and very ordinary, they need to work on the tomato base, chicken pies were a better choice, but again a bit bland. There were about 15 tables occupied including outside tables with people having a drink after work so not too busy. There seemed to be lots of staff running around but they appeared to be disorganised. We won't be going back until we hear that the food has picked up. There is too much competition in the city and T&G needs to lift its game.

My dining experience
Hi There,

I thought I should write a review about Tongue and Groove because my wife and I had a very enjoyable wife last night and felt that T & G required some recognition for this. Everybody else seems to have slammed them so far??? The food was great in the pub sense. Service was great with ten out of ten for enthusiasm. Give this place a visit for sure.

I held my tongue
From the people that brought us one of the most over-rated cafes in town, Gus's, comes one of the worst new openings in the city in a long time. Legions of staff wander around as if in a trance, a half-dozen bartenders can't seem to make one drink between them(it took nearly 15 minutes to get a soda water and cranberry juice and cost $9 for the privilege) and the "managers" are as useless as Julie Bishop on the front bench. This place makes Cream look sharp. Tongue and Groove is an insult to this town, but then again it's often packed, so maybe the joke's on us.

Tongue & Groove - a victim of their own success?
Tongue & Groove has a wonderful atmosphere. It buzzes with all different types of people, some in their tracksuits getting a quick meal, others having a drink after work and yet others starting on a night out on the town. The mural and the hangings all add to this interesting vibe.

We began our visit with cocktails made to our requests by a gracious barman (we hadn't actually planned on cocktails but with our table not quite ready, it was a pleasant diversion).

Tongue and Groove have wait staff who are mainly tall and attractive young men. It quickly became apparent that they had been instructed to make dining at this restaurant a touching experience. This could very well be the niche that T & G aims to fill. Sadly, I do not feel the need to have my arm brushed whenever I engage in conversation with a waiter. Nor do I feel a need to be guided to my seat with a foreign hand on the small of my back.

Although T & G may hope that their wait staff will set them apart from other restaurants, this will not be the case unless they get back to basics. Our main meals were rather bland - the topping on the meatball pizza was particularly sparse and lacking in flavour. Cutlery was to become a recurring issue with our meals. The knives provided with the pizza were certainly not up to the task ahead of them. Our dessert was presented without cutlery of any size, shape or form. Our charming waiter was quickly advised of this predicament but still the spoons failed to arrive. As we waited and watched our ice cream began to melt. A decision was made it had to be eaten with our fingers! No matter how charming a waiter may be, without cutlery any pretence of fine dining is quickly lost.

I would recommend T&G as a great place to enjoy some relaxing drinks with friends or as a place to drop in for some post-movie dessert. However, fine dining is certainly not yet their groove!
