Chapel Street has an otherwise overwhelmingly European flavour, so Tokyo Teppanyaki has found the perfect location to serve up traditional Japanese hot-plate dishes to roving diners eager for a change. The decor is striking, almost like a theme restaurant. The main room is entered via a street-level footbridge, leading to an interior based on Japanese garden design and traditional arts - that is, littered with bamboo, Buddha statues and painted silk screens. The food is promoted as 'live entertainment' and it is truly theatrical, complete with kimono-clad master chefs who marinade, chop and toss the fresh seafood and gourmet fillets through the air to land dramatically on your plate or in your mouth, if you're a good catch. For the less adventurous, there's always miso soup, tofu, sushi, sashimi, or the simpler children's menu.

Go for the entertainment but not for the food
I liken Tokyo Teppanyaki to a theatre restaurant great show but so-so food. It is excellent for large groups, our party of 20 was accommodated with efficiency and helpfulness. Our master Teppanyaki chef was also fantastic. He had a wonderful sense of humour and had us all catching rice in our bowls and scrambled eggs in our mouth by the end of the evening.
The drinks and food are very expensive for the quality and taste presented. Apart from the truly excellent sushi and sashimi...the teppanyaki meats and sauces are very very average.
Expect to pay over $100 per head. It is an experience that you probably only need to take on once. A great ice-breaker for a large group but falls short if you want to experience true Japanese cuisine.

Party
A good place for a party, but you have to join in at the teppanyaki tables. The food was good but expensive, the drinks were really, really expensive.
