Sydney loves a hybrid bar-restaurant, and with the latest Toko, brothers Al, Daniel and Matthew Yazbek seem to have got the mix just right.
Cult Thai eatery Longrain inspired Sydney's dining hipsters at the turn of the millennium, and the crew behind Toko aims to do the same with a similar concept on the Japanese tip. Moving things up a notch from its sister restaurant of the same name in Paddington, Toko Surry Hills sits on the former MG Garage site in Crown Street.
The space has emerged from extensive renovations as a sleek, wood-panelled warehouse with an open kitchen, low-rise communal tables and a seated grill running down on one side of the room. The intelligent menu consists of mod-Japanese dishes designed specifically for sharing at those communal tables, with an emphasis on quality local seafood.
Sushi fanatics can choose from 19 varieties of fresh seafood, and eclectic hand-rolled offerings such as soft shell crab, eel and cucumber. Carnivores are catered for with signature dishes such as miso-marinated baby chicken; and braised wagyu beef with ginger sauce. In Japanese Toko means 'room within a house to relax' and this chic yet informal style of eating is quintessentially Sydney.

Awful service!
Awful service! We went to Toko on 11 May 2009 for my friend's birthday. There were 8 of us in total. When we reached the restaurant (at around 8.00PM), a waiter told us to wait for the table in dining area for 56 minutes otherwise we have to sit in bar area on the couches. We decided to sit on the couch and ordered entrees while we were waiting for a table in dining area. It was getting late so we order more and more food. After around 1 hour, the waiter asked us whether we wanted to move to dining area but we decided not to because mains were served for a while. We were totally ok with the seats as we enjoyed the food and chatting with our close friends. We ordered a lot of dishes and were billed $345 less drinks. The food portion was small but the food was very nice! At the end of the night, one of us, who brought a birthday cake, took a cake to one of the waitresses and asked her to bring out to our table with candles. The waitress took the cake out with small plates and forks but without cake knife. After we sang birthday song and blown the candles, then we asked for a cake knife. Then, one guy (believed to be restaurant Manager) came to us and told us that if you want to cut the cake, you have to pay $3.50 per head. The whole table felt awkward about his conversation, then he started to explain more. He told us that he does a business and nothing is free. He also offered us a time to think whether we wants to cut the cake or not, if not he will pack the cake back to the original package for us. No apology at all. Actually, we would not ask them to bring the cake out in the first place if they told us before about the ridiculous charge when we brought the cake to the waitress. Or if they realised later that they forgot to tell us about the charge in the first place, they should at least apologise!!! We really enjoyed the food though but we were very upset with his conversation. We will never go back again!

Fantastic!
This place is fantastic! Went there with a group of 4 people (I think it would be difficult with a group any larger). We were told it would be about an hour wait which we were happy to do in the lounge area. We ended up being seated within 20 minutes. Shared some fantastic meals and it wasn't too expensive. The hostess and waitstaff were lovely. Overall a fantastic night! I will definitely be going again!

Dinner with Girlfriends
Went to dinner with 5 girlfriends, after being overseas for 6 months. Like most good restaurants, there are no bookings taken, so we sat in the lounge area near the bar while we waited for a table. Sipping cocktails, though only 2/3rd's full hence the reasonable pricing, were delicious. We waited for at least 45 minutes before being seated and when we asked how much longer it would take the gentlemen said very defensively "I have been waiting for all your people to arrive". Thank God that the food was fantastic, but as for the service they need a refresh in staff, who will actually enjoy working there. It would be an embarrassment to take our clients here.

why bother opening for lunch?
Arrived at 1:00pm to be joined by a friend running late at 20 past. By the time we got to the table it was half past. At 2 we were told by staff who, by the way, seemed to lack any understanding of what was a very limited luncheon menu, that they were closing the kitchen. The food we had was OK but the overall atmosphere of the place was that they just didn't want us there. So why bother opening for lunch?

A good night out
It's not new but it's great fun. Whether you're having a kim-chi cocktail or beer, it is enjoyable having drinks next to the blazing matchstick artpiece at the end of the bar.
While sitting on long tables, you are served food as beautiful as your surroundings. The only thing you need to be aware of is order a lot or you'll be left unsatisfied and hanging for more!

Definitely eat here!
This place has a really nice atmosphere, even very early on in the evening. The food was really great, however the portions weren't enormous. The plum sake comes in bamboo which was a nice touch.
In summary, took the girlfriend here, she liked it and I didn't break the bank - two thumbs up!

Dinner with friends...
We arrived at 9:45pm and had to wait 15 minutes to be seated as it was pretty busy. We were instructed that orders are accepted only until 10:10pm so we had to pick quickly from the menu. As we didn't know what to get the restaurant owner told us he'd pick for us. We were bought a sashimi plate (nice but not something I'd ever get again), a sushi platter (very nice though, again, not something I'd pick again), a grilled eggplant (not worth it), chicken teryaki skewers (very nice), fried red snapper (yummy) and a beef fillet teriyaki (excellent). Overall the food was exceptionally prepared and presented. The dishes just looked amazing. Thing is, it was not filling. Thank god they over-ordered for us! When the bill came though we realized letting our host do the picking sure had a price: $60 per person! Wow... Conclusion: wonderful atmosphere, very nice food, over-priced, not a good choice if you're starving. Comment: the music should have been not only themed, but present Recommend: the beef fillet teriyaki
