Tilley's Devine Cafe Gallery

What's not to love about Tilley's? From the tree-lined outdoor area, which is blessedly sheltered from the biting Canberra wind, to the enormous bowl of dusky-coloured blooms on the mahogany counter, the heavy wooden booths and the tie-attired female staff (who somehow never lose their cool regardless of the jostling throng on the other side of the bar), Tilley's is pure, timeless class.

Tilley's opened in 1984, notoriously disallowing men from drinking inside unless they had a woman among their group. Over the years it has become a mecca for live performers, the ruby-toned room creating a theatric, underground-jazz-den-in-a-backstreet-of-Paris backdrop. The conditions of entry state that noisy children (or indeed, adults) will be asked to leave. Tilley's takes live music seriously, a creed that has been rewarded by return visits from grateful bands and performers - and a furiously loyal audience.

The food at Tilley's is quite simple, relying on the quality of the produce used. It's a bit of a brekkie destination, especially on the weekend, when aspiring customers clamber over each other to order at the front counter, staking their claims to a table with a jumper, bag or patiently waiting friend. The coffee is excellent and expertly made, while the displayed range of cakes and slices underneath the counter are temptation enough to leave a little room, or indeed come back later, for a steaming latte and beautifully presented cheesecake.

TILLEYS - WHER HAVE YOU GONE?
Going to Tilleys used to be an event - a fine lunch or a good evening meal but no more. The quality has plummeted to an all time low.Although the regular food isn't too bad, the coffee is appalling and the service is very nondescript. The staff is generally rushed off their feet and just plonk the food down in front of you.In fact there now is almost no service.

Tilleys the best brekkie cafe in OZ
I have been going to Tilley's Devine Cafe for around 15 years and they rock. Sitting at an enormous table that fits all my stuff and a paper etc, I order one of three meals: either the berry pancakes with yoghurt and maple syrup, mushies on toast or the classic bacon and eggs. It's usually not too busy, though Sundays are party days for Tilley's with constant traffic all day. The atmosphere is gentle, classy and relaxed, as is the music and Paulie who owns the place. So original and so Devine!

Tilley's 8 July 2006
I got a real shock when I stopped in at Tilley's for a meal. It had been a couple of years since I'd eaten there, and although my fond memories may have been tainted by time and a few too many ales, this time was a shocker.

The selection on the menu had shrunk, the 'specials' board had nothing on it, and out of desperation I ordered a hamburger.

And a hamburger worthy of a high-school home-ec class was what I got. Over-priced, over-cooked and really, really ordinary.

I was really really disappointed. And anyway, how are you supposed to eat without cutlery? It seemed to me as though the wait-staff didn't give a rats.
