Tiger Lil's

The inverted laughing Buddha sculpture behind the bar fights for your attention with the kaleidoscope of colourful paper lanterns, umbrellas and parasols suspended from the ceiling. The womanly figure of Tiger Lil herself is painted vividly in all her glory on one wall of the restaurant. Chef Logan Bay worked in a Bangkok restaurant for four years, inspiring him to create dishes such as the yakitori chicken with soy and mirin dip; and the charred jumbo prawns with red chilli and honey.

A lunch or dinner at Tiger Lil's won't savage the pocket, with starters set at a very reasonable $10, mains from the grill reaching up to just $19.95, and desserts such as the delectable star anise-scented brulee with palm sugar crust and advocaat ice cream costing only $9. For $60, patrons can try their own hand at the fine art of Asian fusion cooking under the Logan's expert instruction. Tips on matching local wines to your culinary creations are thrown in with the price.

Dismal
Prior to my visit to Tiger Lil's, I had very high expectations. The extensive menu found on their well-designed webpage seemed to diminish in size & variety. The service was poor and the food was ordinary.

For starters we had asked for a platter to share and were later told we could not order this as we were not a group booking. The waitress then told us that if we wanted to order spring rolls to share we would have to order them from the bar, and then bring them back to the table, we could not order them through her. Ridiculous!

The staff were not hospitable or professional. We had 2 extra people and were told they could not be accommodated for. No variations of the meals were excepted. Our food was served separately in five minute intervals of a few people at a time.

As for the food, The squid was overcooked and rubbery, the laksa was far from a traditional broth, and the mango coulis did not have a hint of mango in it. Out the 15 guests I heard not one person say "That was satisfying." With great decor and a happening atmosphere, this venue has great potential, unfortunately it just lacks in the dining department.

Disappointing
When will restaurants realise that their pretty decor does NOT make up for poor service and overpriced food?

We were seated and ordered by 8pm but didn't see any sign of our food, let alone any starters till well after 9pm. My friend ordered the honey sesame king prawns as a starter and laughed when three measly prawns turned up. For $10.95, I should've guessed that this was a bad sign of things to come.

Well after 9:30, the waitresses realise that they've stuffed up our meals and it takes another 30 minutes for all of our orders to arrive. What was even more embarrassing is that the restaurant wasn't even half full.

The food was overpriced and the kind of food you can cook up in your kitchen within a few minutes. Sure, it's great for drinks with friends, but find somewhere else to eat. Even the pretty lanterns don't make up for this poor excuse.
