Tibetan Kitchen

Those who have had their fill of Thai, Indian and Malaysian food - most likely a large proportion of us after the boom in South-East Asian restaurants in recent decades - should try Tibetan Kitchen for a same-yet-different culinary experience. While some dishes carry familiar flavours of curry and spices, the majority of the menu is taken up with such distinctive gems as shakpa (Sherpa stew), Himalayan meatballs and namcheko momo (Tibetan dumplings). The setting is friendly and informal - but with an extensive takeaway menu, these alpine delights can be just as easily enjoyed at home.

A little gem
This is a great restaurant if you know where to sit (at the back, away from the spotlights), when to go (non-peak times e.g. weeknights or Sunday nights) and if you order the delicious banquet menu ($25 each for 2). The prawn Jinghe Maccha is a standout and tastes like a delicate Thai Tom Yum soup. My partner said 'this food is like Indian food but a lot lighter' and I would agree - I just love their dahl and chai.

Ooommmmh!
One of our favourite restaurants - a relaxed atmosphere, friendly waiters, and the food is just wonderful. Try the Jinghe Macha (prawns), for a taste sensation. We're not vegetarians, but quite often just have the Paneer Saag and pumpkin curry, delicious!

excellent food
My boyfriend and I had dinner here on a Tuesday night after work. We ordered tofu curry (orgasmic!) and chilli chicken. Both dishes were absolutely delectable and reasonably cheap. The atmosphere was casual and interesting (chanting music and incense); and the waitress was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely become regular diners here.

Great Food !!!
I have been quite a regular customer and must say, I simply love the food. Tofu Curry and Chilly Chicken are my fav. The service is quite pleasant and the atmosphere is not too bad. You do not feel too heavy after the meal and also its cooked in minimal amt of oil which is what I like the most.

Bad bad service, food good
I went with a group of friends for dinner at this restaurant. We waited for maybe 10 minutes and still no one came to give us the menu. My friend had to go to the counter to get the menu for us. And then we had to wait for another 10 minutes to get our orders taken after many many times of waving our hands to the waiters around. Our orders were taken by this waiter (who we are not even sure works there)- call him Waiter A because he wasn't wearing the uniform and he got our order wrong yet told us he knows. Another waiter - call her Waiter B, then came and took the order paper from him, push him aside (?) and took our order.

When our food finally arrived, waiter A gave my boyfriend the wrong dish but told him otherwise and gave my friend my dish and assured her otherwise too. Not till waiter B came and corrected him that we realised that! And they didn't even apologise for the mistake but just swap meals around.

Once we are done eating, the waiter came with the bill and just put it on our table with no words said. Not even a 'would like dessert with that?' or 'can I get anyone anything else?' or simply, thanks..

Oh well.. the food was good but the whole exprience was bad!

Won't be back!
If having to ask someone to take your order after 30 minutes wasn't enough, when the meal was served (for the second time as the first attempt was to the wrong table) we were asked what we ordered to verify the food was indeed for us. The food was sloppy at best. Mild was Medium, rice was gluggy and Tibetan bread was the only semi enjoyable part. The range of soft drinks was next to none, thank goodness we had wine. We were charged $5 corkage despite one person drinking, it being a screw top bottle, and pouring it ourselves! The bill was placed on our table with no note of thanks and not in response to us asking for it. I would have thought 'would you like deserts' would have come first. Slow service saw a quick meal drag out which was made worse by the lack of parking in the area and the hike back to our cars. I honestly cannot see how this place has survived this many years. We won't be back.

Mediocre at best
Slow but courteous service, with uncomfortable seating. The bread tasted microwaved. The food was overpriced, and some of it came out cold. Not the worst place in Brisbane, but I won't go back.

Delicious Meal
What a find! My partner and I love Asian, Middle Eastern and particularly Indian food and this was a treat. Not your average meal. It was full of pleasant surprises. As vegetarians, it's especially nice to be surprised. The staff were friendly and obliging. The atmosphere evocative yet informal. I'm definitely planning my birthday bash there and bringing a bunch of friends.

A little bit different
A nice little restaurant with a great selection of dishes. Menu variation was extensive and everything tried was very good. Service was friendly and efficient and it was very well priced. Perfect place for a relaxed friday night dinner for 2 or with friends. Bottleshop 50m down the street.

Interesting food
My partner and I really enjoyed our Friday night date at the Tibetan Kitchen - the food was great. My only criticism is that the lighting could be toned down a bit - it was a little too bright for an evening dining atmosphere. Other than that one point, I highly recommend it!

Highly recommended
Decided to try this place using the discount coupon one night. My friend asked for his curry to be extra hot, and it totally blew his mind (and his mouth). Food, service, ambience, value...we loved it through and through.

An outstanding alternative from the usual Chinese, Indian or Thai fare, when it comes to Brisbane's Asian restaurants.
