The new venture from Emma Woods, previously of Rockpool (and winner of the Josephine Pignolet Best Young Chef Award to boot), the Woods is a change of style, pace and scope but as impressive as anything you'd expect from the talented chef. Sitting inconspicuously in suburban Earlwood, the cafe is unpretentious and humble, offering great cafe fare with a slightly fancy twist, like Woodsie's Baked Eggs, with giant white beans, braised eggplant, capsicum, oregano and shaved parmesan and grilled sourdough. For lunch there's a steak sandwich that'll knock your socks off, with finely sliced sirloin, roasted tomato, caramelised onion and rocket on thinly sliced sourdough, or the linguine with prawns, chilli, rocket, tomato and garlic. Simple, Mediterranean flavours win out here but it seems the locals are the ones who win out the most from an addition like this to their neighbourhood.
