It's easy to walk past the unassuming entrance to this new dining mecca. If you descend the stairs into the basement, you'll see a u-shaped timber bar with hanging glass racks in a large room with a wall of boutique wines on the far side. The menu balances 'wow' elements like using truffled cauliflower puree and Jerusalem artichoke fricassee with Coffin Bay oysters, although there are still more traditional options like roasted beef fillet. The friendly and knowledgeable stewards seem to know all about their menu and much of the wine selection, and answer even the simplest question without a hint of pretension. Make sure you've got room to try the steamed quince pudding with vanilla bean and quince syrup ice-cream. There are more than 600 different wines to choose from, and all wines are served in Riedel glassware. The Wine Underground is a retailer, so the prices listed are to takeaway. Consuming any wine purchased on the premises attracts a corkage charge. The coffee can be excellent, but varies in quality.

Wine Underground cosy and tasty but pricey
The best thing about this place was the beautiful decor and ambience. It has a cosy, quiet and luxurious atmosphere perfect for an intimate dinner. The service was also top-notch, with the staff attentive, knowledgable and extremely friendly. The food was good and very interesting, though vegetarians would find options very limited. There were some notable standouts - for example the passionfruit souffle - but some dishes were decidedly oversalted - the tuna tataki, the pork belly and the poussin. Servings sizes are also extremely small, so you certainly couldn't fill up with just a main. It can start to get quite pricey for a decent fill-up, especially when you take into account the prices of wine, which are very over-weighted towards the high end (very few bottles around $50, far more from $80-100+). All-in-all, an enjoyable experience if price is no consideration, but there is better value to be had in Adelaide!
