The Windmill Restaurant in Alice Springs has come of age, recently reinventing itself with a menu to satisfy the fussiest central Australian gourmets.
Lined with red brick, the interior is rustic, although the food is anything but. Asian influences add zing to a modern Australian menu, with entrees such as homemade pork spring rolls alongside succulent Caribbean prawns flambeed in Malibu, finished with sweet chilli, garlic and cream and served on a bed of steamed rice. The house special - and a great choice for a chilly desert winter night - is the lamb shanks. Fit for any large carnivore, these meaty shanks are roasted in a tomato-based sauce, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and served with vanilla mash.
Bring an appetite to Windmill and don't feel guilty if you can't manage entree, main and dessert in one sitting - the servings are large with no pigeon portions in sight. Although the generous meat portions are a magnet for carnivores, vegetarians don't miss out with options such as a grilled roast vegetable stack, which comes layered with baby spinach, ricotta cheese and mixed herb couscous.
