The Red Herring

The Red Herring site is one of the oldest restaurant sites in Fremantle, having housed an eatery of some sort since 1932, and having been the home of Red Herring since 1997. Diners can enjoy sensational views of the Swan River while they enjoy a glass of wine and some freshly shucked oysters. The menu focuses on the freshest seafood, and selections might include sugar-seared swordfish with sticky rice cakes and choi sum, seared tuna on steamed asparagus or squid satay with deep fried eggplant.

Disappointing
I organised a large function at the Red Herring recently, after experiencing a great meal there a few years ago. We went for the set menu for convenience. For the entree, most selected the sushi rolls which were good but strangely served with a knife and fork. For mains, those that chose the steak said they were cooked the same regardless of their preferences stated (rare/medium etc). The fish was cooked well however it was served with an "Asian Salad" which comprised solely of sprouts. Neither the fish nor beef were particularly special, considering the price paid.
The service was not professional on the night, despite their professionalism during the days leading up to the function. The staff did not seem to acknowledge we had booked a set menu. At the end of the night, they overcharged us.

Ok Food - Ok Service
My boyfriend decided to take me out to dinner to the Red Herring which I thought would be so prestigious.

Instead I got a really great starters but an average mains. I got the Red Thai Curry which came with muscles, a yabbie, fish and prawns. I hated the fact that I had to use my hands with all bar the fish and there was no hand bowl on the table, which I just thought was terrible for such a high class restaurant.

The service wasn't that great, the guy hardly spoke to us at all.

I do not think I will go there again in the near future

A buzzy restaurant
My husband and I recently went to dinner here. We had a wonderful time! Our waitress was amazing, very sweet and so helpful. We had crayfish which were quite delicious! Although not very filling. Dessert was tasty, although mine was a bit hard to eat.
There were heaps of people there for birthdays. It had a fun, happy atmosphere, we look forward to going back.

Mushy herring
We had dinner for four at the Red Herring quite recently.
Entree was quite good however the 12 oysters of different styles were rather average. I am not a huge fan of oysters but others that were were not impressed.
For mains, 2 of us had the $50 seafood platter which when it came out had the following.
2 soggy filleted garfish on sticks, 2 prawns, some battered squid, a piece of fish, a couple of the unimpressive oysters some chips and a bowl of salad.
We ate some of it.
One of the others had the whole flounder with some sweet potato chips which apparently was OK and the other had a meat dish which looked ordinary but apparently tasted OK.
Generally i was unimpressed for a total bill of over $400 for 4 people.
