Designed to take full advantage of its bayside location, this restaurant has a decidedly European feel with large, arched windows, a creamy facade and a spacious interior. The modern wood furnishings are tastefully offset by dark floor tiles, wispy hanging lights and a roaring fireplace during winter. The menu is equally impressive, offering a range of dishes from kangaroo fillets and slow-cooked lamb shanks to woodfired pizzas and focaccias. A handful of set menu options will satisfy the indecisive or just plain hungry, and for those who like their meals with vino, an excellent selection of local and international wines is on hand, as well as a range of icy-cold palate-cleansers.

It's all about the view!
Fantastic location and great atmosphere but it lacked on the quality of food produced. There are way to many other choices and far better value for money in the Port Melbourne area. The Pier is more pub than grub which is what it should stick with and not try to be a fancy gastropub and charge top dollar for very mediocre meals.

Proceed With Caution
Event: Farewell dinner for a work colleague:
Meals:
Entree - Asian Platter (~$26)
A boring and bland attempt at an entree consisting of a small selection of frozen deep fried rubbish. Served with supermarket sauces and packet prawn crackers. Totally unimaginative, lazy and overpriced
Main 1 - Chicken Parmigiana ($33)
Well this parma surely conjured up the old adage of two birds with the one stone. The most expensive ($33) and poorly tasting parma I have ever had! What made it worse was it wasn't the iconic Melbourne parma that has become the staple of any pub worth its salt, rather a half baked attempt (it was actually cooked, over cooked) at trying to improve on an already tried formula. The chicken medallions were small, flavourless and dry and it was served in far too much olive puttanesca. By the time the meal arrived, the bottom of the crumbed chicken was already soggy.
Main 2 - Teriyaki Beef Risotto ($26)
Ouch ... this one hurt. It is partly my fault as I knew deep down that a fusion of such different cultures could never work. Sadly I was correct as this was an absolute dud. The teriyaki sauce was so sweet and far too much for a risotto. I felt like I was eating porridge where I had swapped the oats for rice and the milk for coca cola. I am going to remember this for a long time. I wouldn't feed it to my dog or Mother in law.
Dessert - Chocolate Platter ($20)
I was really sucked in on this one and it did sound enticing on the menu. But, testament to the creative genius of the Pier kitchen, it was simply a rehash of already existing menu items. Sliced up pieces of chocolate brownie, 2 shot glasses full of mousse and an array of chocolates that you could buy separately at the bar. Total rip off.
Overall, the menu was far too overpriced and even if I was served it for free I would still ask for my money back. They even had the audacity to charge $1 for bread! As a gastro pub, which I assume it is trying to be; it is still pitched at the more expensive end of the market and fell totally below my expectations.

Great view
The atmosphere and decor is wonderful, and each area is slightly different. Our meals were out in a flash and I would have to highly recommend their brownie with vanilla ice cream and strawberries - freakin fantastic. The portion sizes a huge, a side of fries could feed 2-3 as a main. Great place for brekkie or a leisurely lunch.

Pretty Average...
We popped into The Pier for a couple of tapas and a drink. They had a very limited tapas menu in the bar area, the prices seemed slightly high for tapas, most from $11-$16. We ordered calamari and duck spring rolls and a couple of drinks. My husband seemed to be gone for forever when we went up to the bar to order(no table service in the bar) and when he got back commented they only had two staff on (it was quite busy, almost full) and that they continued to answer the phone a couple of times while serving him.
The wine list was decent and well priced with an all round selection of most varieties. The food came, along with a knife and fork each and they looked like two entrees rather than two tapas, so I am wondering if the chef even gets the point or understands tapas. The calamari was approx six med/large pieces coated in a very thick/heavy crumb and deep fried a bit too long as it was a bit chewy. The duck spring rolls, 2 pieces, were better, not too greasy and good flavours. Both dishes were strangled in an unusually large amount of salad, which is perhaps why I liken the dishes more to entrees to tapas. Overall we are not in a hurry to return if at all, with the quality of restaurants, bars and cafes in Port Melbourne I don't see the point, except for maybe to just have a drink and enjoy the view.

A great night out
On what would have to have been an incredibly busy night with a lot of passing traffic due the Queen Vic docked at Station Pier, the staff managed to supply our table of three with fast, friendly and very efficient service all evening.
With only a glance a waitress was taking orders, filling glasses, checking if everything was to order in a prompt and timely manner without ever feeling too pushy or demanding.
Our party came away from the evening feeling comfortably full on a very nice meal, and some very decadent deserts and a good wine selection, and my wallet came away from the evening intact as well.
With a great view, relaxed atmosphere this is one place that I will be taking friends and guests to again.

The view was awesome - the lookout to the Port Melbourne beach was nice and relaxing. The food was nice and filling, but the service was little slow. But overall it was a great place to have a meal.
