The Peasant's Feast

The Peasant's Feast specialises in cooking with organic ingredients and will design dishes with special diets in mind (eg allergies, diabetes) if you call ahead. The meals are excellent value and the style is provincial European, both in decor and cuisine. The Peasant's Feast does not immediately draw attention to itself - it sits quiet and unassuming amidst the King Street hustle, its interior warm, rustic and a little rugged, revealing little of what wonders lie within. The restaurant uses organic ingredients and talented chef Mark Scotney ensures that this does not mean sacrificing any of the flavour of the provincial European cuisine. For large group functions there is a Feasting Room upstairs. Healthy, delicious and satisfying.

Pleasant peasant
Having read some of the other reviews, our group of four approached this as an adventure! We were not confident of a great result, but were pleasantly suprised. There were no other diners, which was not a good sign, but others nights there seems to be a fair number as we have gone past. The menu variety is terrific. Very tempting dishes, and with vegetarians and vegans in our party, as well as fish and meat eaters, this is a rare place that can cater well for everyone. The service was fine, but could hardly have been anything else. The food was tasty and distinctive. The serving sizes were fair, but certainly not feast-sized and, being organic, were a bit on the expensive side (not outrageous). They do group-feasting as a special arrangement, which might be worth trying. A wine list would be a useful addition, given the style of food and the prices. Desserts were simple, smallish, but very tasty. The atmosphere was nice, with good decor and music. But with no other customers there was a lack of a vibe. The hosts were attentive and genuinely interested in our "organic experience". They offer a 10% discount for a return visit, and we will do that.

Enjoyable feast
Surprisingly good food. Both the carnivores and the vegeterians enjoyed the diverse menu on show.

Nice atmosphere, perfect for a lazy Friday night.
